I guess they get Pell Grants so they would need to. I could not remember if SLU had gone the route of Wash U. IIRC WashU basically offered no financial aid programs and was basically all merit and private scholorship and endowments.

Yeah I think there are only a couple that went that route.
SLU has a title IX compliance department so I just assumed they had other funding.

Hijack but somewhat relevant
I find it funny when people discuss schools such as Miami, USC, SLU, TU, etc and they swear they are public schools.

Title IX was started as an education aspect and to allow females to become prinicipals. It's ideals are correct, but the way judges in California read it are incorrect and used it to influence all parts of education.
I agree with Title IX in concept but not always in practice.

If governmental funds are going to be used to enrich the lives of young people by allowing them a proving ground such as athletics to instill in them the ideals of competition, strive for excellence, fair play among others, then why shouldn't those opportunities be freely given equally to both sexes?
Since you don't even understand the fundamental reason for scholastic athletics then I don't even really want to waste my time explaining things to you.

If universities are not facilitating sports programs on the basis of communtity interest/financial gain, then why would there be any additional benefit for a mens program over a women. Removing money and fandom from the aspect (which Kosmo has) gives universities no incentive to favor men over women sports.

As a piggy back off of that, you could win a lot of money from an uninformed person if you asked which was public and which private:
Miami University (OH)
or
University of Miami (FL)

Back in the day, many college administrators felt that women didn't need the same competitive enrichment that men needed. So there indeed was a need.
It is carried on today to keep things fair, but as was pointed out by st(numbers) above, it has been taken too far.
But the basic principal of equal oppourtunity still exists and I think it's important.
Given your posts, you don't value women's athletics at all.

Thats not necessarily true.
At LSU Women's basketball, softball, and especially gymnastics are very popular and would most assuredly exist without regulatory intervention.
In Louisiana, La Tech women's basketball is probably a top 5 program in terms of historical prestige.
My main issue is that Title IX more often than not, limits the creation of men's programs rather than fosters the creation of womens. And that is unfortunate.

It is far from freely given considering the forced equality in number of sports teams for males and females. That doesnt instill ideals of competition or striving for excellence. It instills complacency entitlement.

$5 says it's womens bowling - title 9 is the reason why Women's Bowling is sanctioned by the NCAA and Mens is not.

You say this as if men's programs are usually more competative and strive for excellence more so than women's programs.
When I said freely, I meant that women should have the same number of opportunities as men to enrich their education at the varsity level. The reason the varsity level was even created was to build a more well rounded education, why should that opportunity be given to more men than women?

What does that have to do with sports?

Matter of opinion i suppose. Agree to disagree.
(excluding people who plan on becoming athletic professionals of course)

If you cant agree with this then idk what to tell you. It is very clear that the talent pool of just about every womens sport is extremely dilluted. Its just biology and genetics.
So yes, I am against just adding another sport to add if because the athletic department is forced to. My feelings for mens sports are similar. Prove you can compete and win in the company you are with currently, then you can move up.
Not everyone should be given a chance at the next level just because someone of the opposite sex is.

That's the reason why collegiate sports were even created.
Like I said earlier, I can't even have a basic discussion with you because you have no basic knowledge.

Title IX doesn't limit the creation of any sport, male or female. The responsibility for which programs exist lies solely on the individual athletic department. Some folks bitch about Title IX "taking away" a sport such as wrestling in the SEC, but if the demand were there, there would be wrestling programs along with Women's Quidditch.
