What you just said here is I think one of the keys to how come Alabama wins and LSU doesn't. Sealing the deal is not something that just happens by accident. It's part of the overall gameplan, the overall psyche of coach and team. But while this seems to be in the Saban-coached Bama's DNA, it is rarely something seen under more current Les Miles coached LSU teams. The Tigers often struggle with lesser opponents, and a valid criticism has been for some time that they let the other team hang around too long. I think this is part of a Les Miles tragic blind spot that refuses to see the obvious. One TD is not a comfortable lead in the SEC. 10 points is not a safe lead in the SEC. Two touchdowns is not a place to sit on the lead when you're playing an Ole Miss or Alabama or even Arkansas; the SEC is too explosive. What LSU doesn't do that Alabama and other strong teams do (or try to do) is build that lead as early and make it as high a wall as possible.

Until Les Miles either realizes this and changes and sets his offense free and seriously develops it according to his best QB's skills, or else retires, LSU will be an also-ran in the SEC West, no longer even second to Alabama... third or 4th or worse.

While I don't agree that we'll be third or fourth or worse, I do agree that there is something that is instilled throughout the Alabama PROGRAM that isn't in the LSU PROGRAM. Knowing how to finish games and, more importantly, how to dig down for key plays in a crucial game is the only thing really missing from LSU right now. My question.........as someone who's not a coach.........is how does our staff and players instill it into the philosophy of OUR program? That, I think, is what makes folks in our fanbase nervous about our future games against Alabama.

Not a coach either, but a long-term LSU fan since Dietzel days. I think the problem you've named is the major problem and difference between an Alabama as they are now and LSU as the Tigers are. The Alabama coaches "get it" and that is instilled into the psyche, the culture, of their teams. The LSU coaches "don't get it" and so there is no sense of that idea (of sealing the deal, making those key plays at key moments, being opportunistic...) to spread to the team. Our coaches don't seem to think that way. The overarching philosophy seems more like plod, plod, plod - keep the mistakes down - don't innovate - be safe and eat the clock. Scoring is just incidental.
