This.

But be prepared to spend a grand a month at a new, "luxury" complex. There are pretty much no vacancies in Houston right now. There's an oil boom and Exxon is ramping up their GIGANTIC new HQ office complex.

Treat Houston like a big circle. Then, starting with downtown, chop off the whole eastern half of the circle. You only want to live the the western hemisphere. Of the western hemisphere, pretty much the central corridor is desirable. Go too far N or S and it's pure ghetto. Even the desirable central west corridor is neighborhood by neighborhood. The level of "coolness" of your address is determined by which LOOP you live inside. Inside The 610 Loop or ITL, you are the coolest. Inside the Beltway is just OK. Outside the Beltway you are a suburbanite. Houston is a city full of islands of prosperity and good people amid and surrounded by a sea of shite. You have to choose wisely.
