Does anybody here remember when this areas was a predominantly white, blue-collar, neighborhood? It really wasn't that long ago.

Not personally, but my Mom tells me about it all the time. Used to be a blue collar plant worker area.

Yep. My Dad grew up in Istrouma, but "moved away" during WW2. After the war, my Grandfather bought a few acres in the country which today is near the intersection of Glasgow and Hyacinth Avenues. However, 70805 whas primarily blue collar plant workers all the way until the late '70's and early '80's. I remember going with my Dad to Ben Peabody's Esso to buy hunting supplies.

I didn't know that but at a party on Sunday I heard someone talking about old BR, and how North BR used to be very similar to Metaire. Said it was very nice and suburban, with all your stores and shops right there. Self contained. Then everyone went to newer developments out in east Baton Rouge and other parishes.
Similar to how people left NOLA for Mandeville.
