Yeah, I've shot pistols, AR's and hunting rifles. Not sure I've ever shot a shotgun.

I have:
Remington 870 Tactical (under bed)
Ruger 10/22 (closet)
Glock 21 (glovebox)
PA-15 (closet)
Sako .308
Kel-tec 9mm
Springfield XD-9 (daily carry)
Springfield XDS-9 (wife's daily carry)
All of these are great weapons. No need for a full size pistol if you plan on carrying.
