If you want something for kids (even 6 or 7 year olds) and adults, the 7mm-08 is perfect.

quote:When I bought my 10 year old son his first deer rifle, my final two were the 7-08 and 308. I ended up w/ the 308 as I already had all the components and dies to reload for it. Now that I have a 7-08, I'd have a hard time choosing between the two were I to make the decision again. Yes, the 308 has more bullet weights and loads to choose from, but how many different bullets and loads does one need? OTOH, ammo availability can be a problem w/ the 7-08. The only local store that carries ammo is Walmart and it doesn't even stock 7-08 ammo; it usually has some sort of 308 ammo available. The 7-08 is a great deer hunting gun using 120-140 grain loads. The 308 does same thing, mainly w/ 150 grain loads. The 308 will recoil slightly more.

I was also thinking maybe 257
Which one, 257 Roberts or 257 Weatherby Magnum? There's a BIG difference between the two.
