It will block your mid to late day sun, but because your deck/pergola sit out on their own, you are going to need some sort of wall shade as well, no matter the option. Some sunbrella fabric would work
I like that set-up. My neighbor removed one of his large trees because it was too close to the corner of his house, and now the mid-day and afternoon sun is blinding.

It is probably fine, but yea, it is bothering me too. I'd want those columns extending down into the ground.
Trust me, that thing is well supported. The 4x4's on the side are directly under the weight bearing load. The ones we added later on the back end are supporting the load on the 3 back columns. I'm 100% confident that thing ain't moving.

vines sound good as long as it's not something that attracts bees/wasps/critters

That's so not true. My wisteria bloomed a little in the first year and then a lot the second year.
It's obviously not trimmed here but that's less than 2 years old here.

She didn't want that smell on the deck. Didn't make sense to me.
They hardly smell at all while growing. You'd have to stick your nose into the cones. At least that's my experience with the ones I have growing.

I'd be worried about my dog eating hops and getting sick. Supposedly, it is pretty rare and they would only eat the hops if they were covered something else desirable, like spent grain.
But you can find some horror stories online.

Well, that's great news. I researched it this past spring because I think it's gorgeous, and would look fantastic in the backyard. The articles online discouraged me. I'll have to look into it again.

I have a polycarbonate tinted cover and it's great

I would like something that would shield me from the rain. I love going outside on a rainy day and smoking a cigar and hanging with the dog. Would any amount of hops or other vines accomplish this?

I updated with a pic. It took nothing to grow too. Just trained it some and that's it.

Not fully, and not year-round.

Well, as you can see from some pics, there is an Entergy servitude behind the house. Right behind the fence is some overgrown brush that i'm going to clear out. I plan on making a new back fence, with a gate, and planting a garden. Hops will be grown. Want to grow cascade and centennial.

The rule I've always used with staining treated wood is to spray it withh a hose. If the water beads up and doesn't soak its not ready. If the wood seems to "soak" it up it's ready. Your columns will probably take longer to be ready.

I'll be honest, I love the smell of hops, but some don't. The vine definitely puts off an aroma.
I can't wait to re-try to get grow some hops (dog got into my first attempt).
I don't get any aroma from the vine unless I get my nose up into the cones... maybe that will change though. Good thing my wife and I both love the smell of hops.

I like the first one, but I agree with Salmon. A Gazebo is better than a Pergola.

Does an individual generally need to get permitting from the parish before putting up a pergola? I would like to put one up and tie it into the awning on my house.

Not from parish. Maybe from the HOA.

depends on Parish. Jefferson doesn't but city of Kenner does. But you could do it anyway as long as no neighbor calls to have them check your permits.

Just to clarify, I do not doubt the 4x4's can support the weight. It is the connection at the bottom of the 6x6, I would be concerned about shear over time and more importantly the moment on it during heavy wind.
I'm not trying to be a dick, just something to think about. You may be correct, from the picture it's not clear what type of connection it is.
