It is a catch 22 deal. The staff is trying to win the next game. They will go with the one they think gives the best chance to do that for this game. They could be wrong, they could be right.

When a new staff comes into a crappy situation, they have the luxury sometimes of" taking lumps" and gaining experience for the more"talented" guy because expectations are lower.

LSU is much closer to being 4-4 than 8-0 at this point. If the staff gets them to 8-4 or 9-3, it maybe their best coaching year. Yes you could argue they created this situation.
