[quote]Bingo. Even if St. George passes, it is still the same old Woodlawn High with the same demographics they are looking to change. I would imagine some of the magnet school families would try to move into Baton Rouge as well if possible. [/
Obviously, it's going to be a long process to get new schools built and turn things around. You don't erase multiple generations worth of incompetence with a single vote. The passing vote signifies the majority is finally in place to put this town back on track...on track to being the great place it has the potential to be. It really is amazing this has gone on for so long. The city has to be excited behind closed doors...they'll finally have a decent school system that they can tout when entertaining new businesses that are interested in relocating here. Imagine how that conversation goes now..."ummmm, yeah, just keep on flipping thru the brochure, no need to read ALL the fine print...put that thing down and let's go sample some of south LA's finest cuisine."

While I appreciate your optimism, experience tells me those of you who think that splitting Baton Rouge into a prosperous area called "St. George" and a blighted area called "Baton Rouge" will be shocked at all the unintended negative consequences for both.
IMHO, The private school parents will keep their kids in private schools. The EBR magnet school parents will move to other parishes or send their kids to private schools. The St. George schools will have the same basic demographic they have now. St. George will fail to establish magnet schools on par with current EBR magnet schools. The EBR schools will get even worse. On top of that it will add another layer of taxation and generally end up costing a lot of families a lot more of their income.
So many negative unintended consequences can spring forth from good intentions without airtight planning. And there is nothing airtight about St. George.

I'm sorry BLM, I don't share this optimism. Until SE BR acknowledges they have been a significant part of the problem, then I don't see them coming up with solutions to fix it. You don't have the same natural advantages that Zachary and Central had. Your fight will be much, much tougher, with maybe about 20% of you willing to fight it

Especially without any new taxes.
