I was just at the YMCA and I kept seeing kids doing slide tackles and even American football style"hits" where they would just collide into eachother where they both fall down. What is legal and what isnt? Can you push?

Not with your arms. You can body someone off the ball or shield the ball, though.

Slide tackles are a part of soccer.

Soccer is a collision sport. It happens all the time.

What you saw probably barely resembled actual soccer. I wouldn't draw too many conclusions about the game from that experience.

Depends on where and who you're playing. Teams like Stoke are allowed rugby tackles on occasion.

i wish they'd keep track of the fouls like basketball... too many times i see a hard collision and i'm thinking "really?, no call?"
along the same lines i'm infuriated with how the offside rules seem to favor the defenders. so what if they can't play defense? who pays to see that?
i want to see artistry and passing and goals
i'll say this... some leagues the soccer is crap bc they have too many teams and too few get relegated

This should never happen.

That's basically what cards are for anyways. Theres a reason persistent infringement is a yellow.

quote:Actually the ref does keep track of fouls in his head. If same player constantly fouling he will get warnings then cards.

Yes, but I don't want them putting the foul counts on the scoreboard like they do in basketball. I feel like basketball refs sometimes see those numbers and either consciously or subconsciously try to make the fouls even throughout the game. I wouldn't want the same thing to happen in soccer. Just keep calling the game as you see it.

Otherwise known as "SEC Basketball Officiating." The foul count could be 16 - 4 with 5 minutes left in a half. You better believe those officials will have that 4 up to 12-15 before the half, so it's less obvious that they're just calling fouls at random.
Doesn't matter how painful it is for players, coaches or fans - it's gonna happen. Drives me nuts.

football hits... no; I coach youth soccer and teach the kids how to properly slide tackle
