A Detroit police officer accused of manslaughter in the death of a 7-year-old girl will go on trial this week, as national attention remains focused on the militarization of U.S. law enforcement and police violence perpetrated against people of color. Aiyana Stanley-Jones was sleeping in her home on the east side of Detroit on the night of May 16, 2010, when officers barged into the house. They were conducting a police raid in search of a murder suspect who lived at that address -- and being filmed for a reality TV show in the process -- when Officer Joseph Weekley accidentally fired his gun. What exactly caused him to fire is still a matter of dispute. But the shot killed Aiyana.

Update: all charges have been dismissed against the officer who pulled the trigger. LINK
Protect and serve. Disgusting.
What would you do if that was your little girl?

There would have been more than one death if that was my child

While this is a terrible tragedy. shite happens when you harbor a fugitive.

I would have killed that POS on the spot. I don't even care if I get killed

From the article
Does Mr. Owens have any culpability in this?
quote:
It was a little after midnight when the Detroit Police Special Response Team, a unit similar to a SWAT team, descended on the Stanely-Jones residence in search of murder suspect Chauncey Owens, who lived upstairs. Owens was suspected of having killed a teenager a few days earlier, a charge for which he would eventually be convicted.

Of course not. This will be used as yet another rallying cry for political gain and rioting.

Unless Mr. Owens looked like a 7-year old girl...no. A criminal possibly being in a building does not give the police carte blanche to assault innocent people

Sounds like the officer had no intention of pulling the trigger either had the grandmother not interfered.

You are a disgusting bootlicker... I hope one day those boots come down on you.
A 7 year old innocent girl is dead because these military equipped gang members want to play with their toys.

I meant the fact that the swat team was there. If mr Owens wouldn't have killed the teen there wouldn't have been a cop in the house who couldn't properly handle his weapon. It's a sad, tragic accident, if I read the story correctly.
It was an accidental discharge, correct?

I feel bad for that family and I feel bad for that officer that has to live with it.
But it would not have happened if the original crime had not happened.

Mr. Owens shouldn't have killed anyone either...but there are better ways to apprehend criminals than to go all gung-ho with innocents in the house.
Why not do proper research and maybe wait to violently raid a place when she's at school maybe?

Is that the 7 year old's fault? Do the cops have no responsibility whatsoever?

Nope.

Of course they do on some level.
Now answer my questions...
Does the guy who committed the murder have no responsibility ?
Does the family who harbored him have no responsibility ?
Does the grandmother have no responsibility for interfering and causing the officer weapon to discharge ?

Sounds reasonable to me, but don't they usually do these things at night or in the early morning? There must be a reason why it happens when it does.
Serious question... Do you consider this murder or an accident?
I don't know the laws but are accidents considered man slaughter? If so, how is this classified in your mind.
I generally appreciate your take in things. I'm not flaming, just asking.

I hate the police for the most part.
But it is funny to see the badasses show up in these threads. "I'd have killed the cop"
