I don't understand why people think these small, lightweight revolvers are great for women. Felt recoil increases as firearm mass decreases. Unless you're going to conceal carry it, buy a full framed revolver in the same caliber.
AMEN!
People think, "small gun, small recoil". Not the case at all.
Fr33, I strongly suggest you AND your SO choose the gun. Women are a lot less likely to use a gun which they did not choose. And trying to make her shoot a tiny 38 will deter her from wanting to shoot any other pistol.
New shooters are very nervous about 2 things:
1. Sound
2. Felt recoil
Getting them past these two blocks is the hardest thing to do initially. Once they are past that, they can move on to smaller, compact carry guns.
For a home defense gun, there is no reason to not get something full sized. I would suggest a full sized polymer handgun in 9mm. It gives you anywhere from 15-20 rounds of ammo in one mag, there is little felt recoil, the sights will be better than those on a revolver, the slide will be easy for both of you to rack (but should stay loaded anyway), and it will have a comfortable grip that is adjustable for both of you to use.
Here's a valuable video you should watch from my YouTube channel:
Firearms for Women
And lastly, like I said before, you BOTH should choose the gun. She will be more likely to practice and actually use it if she feels she has some say in the decision.
Best of luck to you.

EDIT: I also don't think a full sized revolver is a bad decision. Just don't get something tiny that is intended for carry if it's only gonna stay home.

Get a .357 and you can still shoot .38 Special through it for lighter recoil.
In .38 Special/.357 caliber, you want this:

I don't think most people think this. I find most women dont want a "heavy" cumbersome weapon. They are inclined to shy away form it. Ergo, people gravitate towards (and manufacturers offer) lightweight guns. They do this with no consideration to the recoil effects a light weight weapon produces. That said, most women won't want a .357 or .44 or .45.
I don't think your average buyer who is looking for a home defense weapon considers the same aspects people on the OB do. Most of them figure they'll never need it anyway and, errantly, fail to properly consider their choice of weapon.
And this is absolutely no offense to the OP. I'm speaking only in general terms.

Not my SO. Just a friend of mine. She needs one and I've got some scratch to spend so I figure I'd do a good deed.
A 9mm maybe the most economical option.
What can I get one for these days?
