I can go ahead and add this to the "bands everyone likes but i think sux" list

Was good for the 90s, now we have good music so we dont have to listen to 90s nostalgia acts...

Except tier 1 nu metal like limp bizkit or the deftones

I think this deserves its own thread. I'm curious as to why some bands like RHCP, Rolling Stones, and Pearl Jam will ALWAYS be considered "cool" no matter how shitty their recent albums are while bands like U2 and Coldplay who (in their primes) were every bit as good and groundbreaking are constantly hated on and mocked, and whose recent albums (in my opinion) are a cut above what the aforementioned "cool bands" have put out at times.

You could actually argue that U2 has stayed relevant and worked harder/longer to push the envelope than the Rolling Stones did. The Stones have been absolute shite for over 2 decades now and basically mailed in everything they've done since the early 1990's. So why do they get a pass, but U2 does not? I'd argue that "Magic" by Coldplay is one of the top 5 songs of 2014 and is about as daring or cutting edge as anything that band has put out, but nothing.

U2 and Coldplay were never near as groundbreaking as Rolling Stones, Pearl Jam, or even RHCP.

U2's best album, The Joshua Tree, doesn't even come remotely close to the Stones' legendary run of albums from the late 60s to mid 70s.

Coldplay has a few good singles in the early 00s but never released an album as stacked as Pearl Jam's Ten or RHCP's Blood Sugar Sex Magik.

Also realistically, and musically aside, people just don't like Bono and Chris Martin for a number of reasons.

I never read Pitchfork really but their review of the last RHCP reiterates what you said. Their latest album was mostly pure shite that just regurgitated previous RHCP music, albeit in smoothed over, radio friendly style. They even compare RHCP to some of the bands you mentioned.
