Should I put any stock whatsoever into the Yahoo Player weekly projections?

I only ask cause this is my 1st time ever playing. But it seems like these Yahoo projections are pretty wacky at times, and completely off. I don't mean off from what the player actually does weekly, i get there will be obvious variations there.
I just mean that the actual predictions of some players or defenses seem to be so far off based on who they're matched up against.
Help a n00b out!

ESPN's projections are 10x more accurate than yahoo's.

Laugh all you want. I didn't say they were good. I said better than yahoo's, which are shite.

I just find ESPN's projections insane. Yahoo's are pretty terrible too.
Check out CBS's, they are better for sure.

reggie bush's projections are sky high and according to both NFL Sirius and Sirius fantasy the bills have a stout run D...I know joique is hurt but jeebus
also Julio jones is projected at 19 in our league. I haven't seen a wide receiver with that high of a projection ever. Josh Gordon when he was a lock for 100 yards and a TD last year never went over 15 for sure

Calvin Johnson was projected as 22 last week despite his bum ankle. Got me 3 points.
Also, I think Kelce was projected about 7 points last week.

There's been a few reasons as the season has gone on, but Reggie Bush's projection for this week was the one that made me start this post.
That and I saw week 1(maybe) where NYG was projected something like 24 points against the Detroit defense, it was absurd. Then NYG had another week with 20+ projected on defense.
As another poster said, i'll also check out CBS.

better than you think; however, you're a little too sensitive and thoughtful for my tastes. We could never be friends

it's weird, but usually for the known commodities yahoo does a really damn good job at the projections. They will never project HUUUGE games though so they're projecting Rashad Jennings to have 16 points this week, that really means they expect 120 yards and 1 or 2 TDs. It is strange but I've gotten pretty good at deciphering it, even though I don't give a shite about the projections.

Point projections have to project number of touchdowns, which is nearly impossible to predict. They are of use to those at the bottom of the fantasy knowledge barrel, or to those who play in off the wall custom leagues. If you play in a standard league, rankings are far more useful than projections.

Yeah in yahoo in one of my PPR leagues Julio is now projected at 24. Megatron was at 24 until today, now he's at 19. Andre Ellington is projected at 14 despite not score more than 11 so far. Also, yahoo has Fitzgerald projected at 14 which is ridiculous considering their QB situation and his numbers up to this point, while ESPN has him at 6.
ETA: I just prefer the projections to be low-balled rather than high. I get tired of seeing a guy that's averaging 8 points a game projected at 14 every single week.

I already have one friend who thinks redskins is racist, but he gets a pass because he's 100% NA, and I find it funny that his father is the biggest wasp ever and so is he. If he were white on the outside as well, I'd have to dump him too

yahoo was off by .2 on rodgers in my league last night. im sure there projected stats are no where close but damn thats impressive

I think they're usually very good, but this week there is definitely something going on, I've never seen projections this high from them.

Yahoo and ESPN do their projections differently.
Let's use a healthy Calvin Johnson for example, and I will assume standard settings with fractional points since this is your first time playing.
ESPN tries to project exactly what Calvin will produce on Sunday. 8 catches, 132 yards, and 1 TD. Their projections would be 19.2 points in your league.
On the other hand, Yahoo tends to take an average score for each player (presumably based both on past and expected performance). Then, Yahoo fluctuates each match-up every week due to the opponent, weather, and the health of the player. As you can see, you can view all of a player's projections on Yahoo for the rest of the season and find they all tend to be within a couple points within each other.
Instead of hitting the nail on the head, Yahoo will expect Calvin to produce 6.8 catches, 102.3 receiving yards, and .9 TD in the game, which is obviously impossible, but they just want to get close. Yahoo's score would 15.63 for Calvin Johnson.
Both systems have their merits, but ultimately, projections are only a slight aid. You have to roll with your gut and instinct, but they can be a nice guiding hand to a new player.

When I really can't decide between two players I use the projections as my coin flip. That's about it.
I rarely, if ever, do this though.
