He wasn't.

Yes, the coach body slammed him, but the guy was in the midst of commission of a crime. He ran up on an innocent party, who has the right to defend himself using reasonable force. Well, it appears the kid has no major injuries, so it would be nigh on impossible to argue he used excessive force. The coach is also only allowed to use force so long as the threat is ongoing, which it was. The kid would have a case if the coach then started kicking him when he was prone on the ground.

If this kid sues for assault, he's going to lose, and he's going to lose badly.

He might lose, however the coach pursued the kid and took the aggressive stance. Its not as if he ran away from the kid.
