@DellengerAdv: Transcribing tape. Pretty clear at what's holding back the 3 #LSU RFr DTs from playing: Technique, att. to detail, knowledge of the defense

Bad recruiting? Not getting coached up? Do we blame those 3?

How does 1 5 star and 2 4 star DLine guys not contribute in 2 years. Plus they all played in those high school all American games.

You already answered your own question with Dellenger's quote: "Technique, att. to detail, knowledge of the defense".

i still don't get it.

let's not pretend that the DT's that are playing are using proper techniques, etc. we are getting gashed for a reason up front, proper technique or not.

i say just rotate em in, see how they perform.

They should not even be playing right now. Our starters now should have been backups this year.

Too many early departures is forcing guys to play too early.

Something ain't right......if Haley can't reach these guys we need someone who can. It's either talent isn't being evaluated properly on the d-line or they're not being taught in a manner that is having any effect. I lean to say it's the latter since its guys who were recruited by pretty much all of the big boys, and not marginal takes.
Hell the technique the guys who play is pretty bad. Hunter still can't set an edge, and gets blocked out of the play much too often.

See Chris Davenport for a 5* DT who never could contribute. The guy was so big in HS that no one could block him and he made great plays all the time. He gets to college and rarely sniffed the field because he couldn't just push guys around anymore and actually had to use technique. He never could get the technique so he moved to OL and then transferred to tulane.

Player lack development isn't so cut dry as bad recruit evaluation or bad coaching. It has to do with the kid's mental make up. Can he handle the pressure? Does he have the desire to work and learn so that he can be successful?

Ogeron always talks about breaking down the highly recruited guys, so they can know where they stand. Some will embrace the work others won't.

It's called the Les Miles Dog House, Dog Housing 4 and 5 star recruits is part of your coaches DNA. That is why he only wins 40% of his games against Top 5 SEC games and has gone to the Chic A Fila and Outback Bowls and is currently ranked #15 and loses to Miss St.

Mass exodus to the NFL is going to manifest itself most prominently in the trenches. This shouldn't surprise anyone. They're just not ready yet, it doesn't have to be anyone's fault.

i said the same thing here the other day.

I watched gilmore and bain specifically saturday and they both looked extremely raw from a technique standpoint.

Has to be coaching or willingness to work to improve.

Gilmore looked good vs the run. Get him in the mix on early downs

unfortunately coaching is the primary answer, and recruiting. enough repetition can correct mindlessness. danny mccray would be one example who was always out of position in college and had a good couple of years at the next level

there are two main philosophies of recruiting:

1) get the big, fast, strong guy and teach him technique. That is, don't place as much emphasis on his high school performance, brains (unless QB) b/c the young man may have gone to a small school and blown up everyone, but it's irrelevant due to competition. Then you take the big strong fast guy and force him to be better (or process him??)

2) get the over-achieving guy with brains, or try to get some combination of 1 and 2.

LSU tries to combine both, and unfortunately, you can't always have it both ways (unless patrick peterson and a few others). this could mask coaching shortcomings if you have enough pat petersons, et al

by the way, this is the primary thing that saban changed in his general philosophy when he came back to college

Redshirt freshman should not be expected to have good technique or any of those attributes listed. FFS, they're barely a year removed from HS. The problem is early departures forcing faster development. Luckily, it seems LSU hit gold with DG. He's going to be a great one.

I highly doubt Haley is here next year anyway. We'll probably be seeing a new dline coach.

It would be nice to see a stunt, or even a swim move out of our DL.

I still say all 3 of those guys will be quality DTs. With Herron, I wonder if it is disciplinary given the coaches naming him starter when they thought QT was out for the year. I've said this several times, but these guys really are not progressing all that slowly. How many of our recent greats really contributed their first two years? Dorsey may have been the 3rd DT in the rotation but Brockers and Logan were redshirted and I don't recall hearing much from Nevis until his JR year. Godchaux and Lacouture are definitely the exceptions. We are feeling it this year because we didn't sign any DTs in 2012 but hindsight is 20:20 and no one would have guessed LSU would have sent more underclassmen to the NFL during that time than anyone else. You still have the 25 man yearly limit and the 85 total. On paper this is a transition year. No one wants to go through a transition but we have all the talent and an excellent coaching staff to continue to succeed long term.
