Also, Steelers in Arkansas?
I didn't know the reason either until I went to a Steelers game a couple of years ago in Pittsburgh. (Subtle brag admitted)
I wore Saints wear, it was a Steelers/Ravens game so I got a lot of conversation (all nice). I told the Steelers fans that it had been my experience that I always saw Steeler garb at every NFL stadium I'd ever been to, regardless of which teams were playing. Several of them told me that it was the result of two events about in the 1970's: the obvious one is the Steelers were really good then, four Super Bowl trophies in six years. Some people growing up then all over the country became Steeler fans due to this success. The other one is that the Steel industry went to hell, a bunch of folks lost their jobs and left Pittsburgh to find work and ended up all over the country but brought their Steeler fandom with them.
tl/dr: the diaspora caused by the meltdown of the U.S. Steel industry in the 70s has Steeler fans all over the Nation

I've never seen a Rams jersey here. The people here have a relatively long, pre-bandwagon, history of rooting for the Seahawks.

This is different than that map of team popularity by state that didn't have the Colts in Nevada, Packers in Idaho and Raiders in Montana, etc.

Nebraska - Redskins? It may be obvious, but what am I missing here?
Nebraska is so close to a plethora of teams...Broncos, Rams, Chiefs, Vikings, Bears, etc...

Thought they would be Dallas fans or St. Louis fans? Don't get Steelers in Arkie????
I figured Dallas, but this weekend watching games the only jerseys were Steelers. I know here in South Arkansas there a lot of transplanted Pittsburgh fans working for the defense contractors. And Mike Tomlin got his start as a coach at Arkansas State. And the only two jerseys I ever owned were the Redskins (John Riggins and the hogs) and the Steelers.

Could be. My grandmother is from an Italian community just outside of Pittsburgh. And a lot of the guys at the railroad in NLR are steelers fans.

I don't even know if there's a Dick's in Arkansas.
I can say without doubt that all of Sam Bradford Rams jerseys were returned for Johnny Football jerseys when the Rams drafted Michael Sam. If there's one thing Oklahomans like it's a whiskey drinking, casino gambling, cash flashing skirt hound, that can throw the damn ball.

Surprised that the most popular team jersey in New York is the Bills. I figured it would be the Giants or the Jets.

Some of these states I do not understand

Oklahoma being the Browns has to be the Johnny Football effect. Plenty of Aggies in that state.
Jersey sales couldn't quite beat the Cowboys, but Oklahoma doesn't have a team.

I'm laughing at the Raiders following in Montana. Threw me off a bit
Must be a lot of Messicans there.
Nevada threw me off with the Colts. You would think they'd be 49ers fans with what's his face as their QB.

Makes sense, but due to their success they are also a highly popular team with fans from all over the country who have never had any kind of connection to the Steelers or Pittsburgh, similar to the Cowboys.

*reason for the Steelers' nationwide popularity
This is what I said in the body of the earlier post, agreeing with you.

I feel like a lot of these surprising results may come to light if we find out when the data were collected to make this plot.

Ah okay. I thought it was Steelers diaspora first, success second. Obviously all of the most successful franchises have fans all over the country.. but the diaspora point was the only time I've heard nationwide support happening other than people across the country just jumping on the most successful team.

Some of these anomalies are probably due to there being no clear leader in a state. If a bunch of teams have nearly equal sales, one of them has to come in first. It doesn't mean it's the overwhelming favorite in a state.

The results may seem surprising, but it's only because they lable an entire state as a fan of a certain team, when all it means is that one team sold more jerseys than the others.
Alabama could be like 31% saints jerseys, 29% falcons, 25% titans, 15% other. Close but a nod to the saints.
Also, fans buy jerseys of players they like, or players who are from their city or state. Which is why I think some of the results seem odd.
