They weren't allowed to renew their lease, it's not like they didn't pay their bills......

Incorrect. Everyone is allowed to renew their lease, just at the right price. Looking to negotiate for lower rent just because you have been there for 25 years doesn't cut it.

I'll bet that's what happened. When you have an average ticket of $4.00 (approx), the 15 people who sit in there all day are not spending any $

I disagree and digress. I had a total PIG living in my condo. I would not have renewed his lease for any amount of money.

If the landlord didn't want the coffee shop there, he could notify the owner that he wasn't renewing. There's always a clause in a lease that either party can terminate within "x" number of days of lease expiration.

Isn't it a free country? Can't anybody by a corner, build a building that they like, and open a coffee shop?

We have laws. All kinds of laws. Zoning laws, for example.

Sure. And there are plenty of locations zoned for coffee shops around LSU and even near here. Buy one, lease one, put your money where your mouth is!

We could pass a law and make them stay open! Rent controls! Government subsidize the rent!

I mean really. Do you all want socialism?

Parking is a mess, but then again if people didnt park and spend 5 hours at the coffee shop maybe more spots would be open. or if students wouldnt park and walk to class. Really its the bww parking lot causing all of this. they pretty much tow anybody even employees. So where do those people go to park, by subway and chipotle. But it's funny because there is a lot over by louies where mcdonalds used to be, but it is always empty.

they need to take one of those lots and build a parking garage (and stay the frack away riverside).

I was never a frequenter of this coffee shop, but I have friends and colleagues who rave about it all the time.

Sucks to see it go.

I can't begin to explain why this place is of the utmost importance. I've worked here for 4 years now and have first hand seen the positive impact Highland Coffees has had on the community. Highland Coffees is basically my life.

^^^ Little overkill if you asked me.

I am confident the owners will put a great tenant in the space. There has been an incredible amount of interest in North Gate since the Mr. Gatti's has been up for lease. I would bet that a nice mom and pop shop will be the next tenant there. Highland Coffees was a great spot. But if a new tenant is willing to pay more rent, and still adhere to the local vibe of North Gate, then can you blame a property owner?

Isn't it still vacant?

If there was that much interest, someone would have bought it up.

That place looks like a Barnes & Noble. If I was there I would raise money through serious patrons of the coffee shop and reopen as a franchise of a better company.
