Or maybe, just maybe, could it be because their culture leads to eating a lot of unhealthy food all the time?

This. I waited tables for 7 years in Baton Rouge and overwhelmingly black people order seafood platters and fried food compared to white people. I always thought it was crazy that even for lunch time a typical black person ordered seafood platters while most white people ate something liter like a sandwich or salad.

Well said. The results are interesting and deserve to be published; however, because there are so many other variables or factors that could account for this relationship, it is rather presumptuous to make definitive statements about causation. This turns an interesting study into pure sensationalism and borders on junk-science.

I would think genetics would have a large role to play in this as well.

Uhhh - the South is fat as frick. Lots of black folks live in the South. Wouldn't it be racist if they weren't fat as frick?

What am I missing?

Fat people are the fricking worst.

Part of the problem is lack of healthier options in areas with minorities. They are usually low income and do not attract businesses that could offer healthier options. Thus, they are raised on unhealthy foods and pass the habits on in a vicious cycle.

While I won't argue with you that there should be consideration of a socioeconomic role in the findings of this study, this little bit right here is bullshite.

Cooking your own food and controlling portions is a wam-bam, sure fire way to control your nutrition AND cut down food costs. Get some rice, red beans & dab of cajun seasoning and you have a cheap arse pretty balanced meal. Spend one second in the produce section for God's sake. Problem is that most people, from rich to poor, lack the conviction and motivation to adhere to this practice. If it is wrapped in any form of plastic, chances are, don't buy it if you think or know you have a problem.

Blaming anyone but yourself/your family for obesity is a fricking joke and basically belittles your real power over an outcome more than any negative stereotypes you face day to day.

That's more where my negative reaction to this is based- how it is so taboo to hold people accountable for perhaps the most basic personal responsibility in life.

Good God what pussies.

Well they are girls but you know what I mean. I like women to tell me to eat shite if I ever say anything they don't like. This suffering in silence look at what a victim I am crap has been going on forever, it's just codified now so virtually anybody other than a white guy who likes women can use it.

If somebody is that fragile I am not paying any attention to them. They do not deserve any respect. Normal people are not like that.

You make a good point that makes this study even more disappointing: they did not consider the individuals' attributions, specifically their the locus of control (i.e., does the individual believe that they have control over an outcome). This his disappointing because this is a well studied area in psychology, and in particular, social psychology. I would imagine an individual who has an external locus of control (i.e., believes he/she does not have control over an outcome) is less likely to subscribe to a healthy lifestyle because he/she does not believe that their weight is their control; similarly, a person with an external locus of control will be less likely to prove stereotypes wrong. Defining oneself and choose one's fate based on external factors can only lead to negative consequences, leading to obesity and confirming to less desirable stereotypes (all races, ethnicities, genders, religions, geographic locations, or any other demographic has them) that are often a result of a refusal to take accountability and make personal changes.

You're dealing in absolutes in thinking that I am saying this is the complete problem. You're also thinking about this very moment instead of a multi-generational problem, We take for granted that we shop very close to our homes and generally have some sort of transportation. Starting before segregation shopping was limited as well as transportation. You stayed in your neighborhood and didn't venture too far. As the time went on and fast food made it's emergence they found that these areas were sources of good income. So you now have a group of people who, for the most part, weren't able to venture further out for more food options as well as never learned of anything better. A vicious cycle was started where the next generation never learns to cook for themselves due to the same fundamental problems of low income, limited transportation, and just not being taught how to get something a little better. For instance, look at all the people we like to call trashy on this board. I'm a fan of picking on the flat bill hat and neck tattoo group. If you know anyone like that and take a look you'll find that they were taught that this is the norm/acceptable. Thus, they don't how to achieve anything different. If it was so easy to change someone's upbringing our society would be a lot different. We fight over shite like Common Core when we could make some real changes by looking at curriculums and adding legit cooking and finance classes. You have to get at them young before the habits set in!

Like those vicious, racist wing restaurants. Selling unhealthy fatty discarded hunks of chicken fried and coated in hot sauce. Anyone dealing in those deep fried minority killers should be publicly reprimanded... Especially the ones that team unhealthy food with scantily clad women!

Nah... I'm just bullshitting. Fatties gonna fat...
