Trimtab's bourbon barrel beer is the best beer made in bama IMO.
Agree to disagree. I'd say that GP SnakeHandler is the best beer in the state. They also have an awesome Coffee Outmeal Stout, a superior IPA, and Mumbai Rye right now.

I always forget about The Garage (cash only though). Damn their sammiches are tasty.

The past 3-4 years has really been a renaissance for bham.
I remember going to the BJCC for some things, and a couple of UAB basketball games. City was meh. Fast forward a few years and it seems like Bham is booming.
All my old Shelby county friends are trying to get me back up to town so I can try the new (to me) world of beer.

Nope, you are wrong. Your completely subjective opinion is just wrong

Place is pretty meh for me. They have a good beer selection, but I like the atmosphere at JClyde better.
To each their own though.

It has been cash only for as long as I can remember. They have an ATM inside though.

Isn't it really close to J Clyde? I'm not entirely sure where it is on 20th, I'd imagine its walkable.
Its worth a shot, my friends are beer snobs to say the least

Go to Garage Cafe at night. Eat at Bottega or Highlands or Hot Hot Fish club.
best advice in the thread ^^^

Yea, it is right down the street. Probably no more than 50 yards or so from J Clyde. It is between 5pts intersection and The Break.

Stay at the Westin in uptown. There's some pubs there, you wouldn't have to leave. Avondale has Avondale brewery and Saw's soul food. Slice and Rojo are also good. For BBQ, Moe's is beside Slice. Most people who talk about Birmingham have probably never been. Is it New York? No, but there is a worse places you can go. Downtown has the feel of old NE cities due to the Steel industry of the mid to late 1800s. Just don't go north of the civic center, and you'll enjoy yourself. Also, good people brewery is close to the baseball stadium.

I've been there several times as well.

then the arcade bar just appeals to my 10 year old self.
We actually had an event for work there last week and had the whole arcade area to our group. I couldn't stay that long since my daughter had something that night, but it was neat to hang out there for an hour or so.

It really is cool to see it happening. I've lived in this area for 10 years. My oldest child is 6 so I haven't really hit the late night bar scene in a while, but just the stuff that has come to downtown the past few years is amazing. I've been working downtown for 2.5 years now and in that time the new Regions Field/Railroad Park area has taken off. They're building something there now. I jogged past it about an hour ago, and it is a construction site. They're finally putting a legit grocery store downtown. Publix is slated to be built sometime next year. And the financial district where I work has a ton of old and new lunch/dinner options.
The Southside will never have a problem with good places making it. UAB and all that surrounds it will easily support any good business. It is the BJCC area that isn't going to have consistent customers, but that Uptown area looks nice from the few times I've driven past it.

The last thing I am hoping for is a legit bowling alley in the downtown/southside area. It would kill it with all the college students around there.

That would be good. And it would probably not have to close for repairs every time we get more than .5 inch of rain like Vestavia Bowl.

Yea, Vestavia Bowl is just awful. I never go there anymore. Only 280, which is such a pain. There is a lot of good area for one too, between Good People and Dreamland. So many of those lots are unused.
Also needs a Chipotle. At that point, i will be set

You also really have to know where to go in this city. As someone said earlier, if you are somewhere at the wrong time of day, it will seem awful/dead. If you are at lakeview bars at 9:00, it will be pretty empty
Also, for all the night owls, The Nick will not be open 24 hours on the weekend. You can stay there from 2PM or so on Friday, and not leave until 6AM on Monday
Yep always shite going on, I'm more of a lakeview guy myself. But Collins and Paramount are awesome.
ETA: Parkside is awesome every time I've been as well.

I've only been there a couple of times. I'm actually going on Friday for another work thing. We went there two years ago, and had called and reserved several lanes since there would be like 15 of us bowling, and they don't even have the bar open. They said it was open, but the guy who was bartender wasn't there. We asked if someone else could get us a couple pitchers of beer and start a tab, but they wouldn't do it. It really sucks. Not sure why we're going back there, but it will be a couple hours of blowing off steam with the work crowd, having some beer, and then heading home to start the weekend early.
I used to bowl in a league at a former job, and we used the one in Pelham. Oak Mountain Lanes. It was pretty nice. Not the dingy old smoke-filled bowling places from my youth. And the food was pretty good for a bowling alley. We did a lunch-time league, and they let us get anything on the menu for $5. The Patty Melt was good.
