What I don't like about these studies is that they don't factor in that improvement in technology doesn't apply only to the 9mm.
it really doesn't matter as 9mm is the alpha round

Couple questions:
Do they do these gel tests with it wrapped in clothing?
Do they put bones in the gel to see how that affects the loads?
Why is penetration better than internal damage? Obviously at some point(say 2" vs 12") there is a major difference, but does it really matter at 12.04" vs 12.06"?

after they extract the bone marrow and donate it to sick children

because people bleed out easier than internal damage from .22

does that grip not print on your shirt, sticking out a little like that?

I have always said this and will continue to say it. It really comes down to personal preference because they all pretty much do the same thing.
Anything is better than nothing, and .380 and .22 Magnum aren't all that far behind w penetration. They just don't have much energy.

The top bullet is a 380 Auto 90 gr. Critical Defense round at 896 fps from a 2.75" barrel Ruger LCP. The bottom bullet is a 22 WMR 45 gr. Critical Defense round from a S&W 351 PD with a 1-7/8" barrel at 1038 fps.
.22 WMR expanded

maybe velocity.. but not penetration

So basically they don't do any other tests than straight up gel, and open holes > closed holes? It would seem like loss of blood = loss of blood. I guess the psychological factor of seeing your blood pouring out on the floor is significant.
I was thinking of it as more of a shotgun vs pistol damage comparison, and with that, major damage > clean pass through

To me, and I am completely untrained in ballistics, the two 9mm profiles are significantly less lethal looking than the others in this pic.
Now, I own 9mm and that's my pd choice. So I'm banking on what I see there being plenty enough, but it definitely appears lesser.

Agreed. You are pretty much just punching holes at pistol range

The 9 mm is the weakest round compared to 45, 40, and 357 sig.
But all four are good rounds. Not that much difference.

Wondering why the .40 velocity is so low? I always thought .40 blasted out close to 1300.

That's 10mm velocity
That is false. The study was probably using standard 40 s&w rounds. Hot 40 s&w rounds will reach 1300 velocity.

It seems that test is very old. Many different defense rounds in each caliber to choose from then and more now.
A 45acp in the 230gr flavor can be had closer to 950fps, 185gr closer to 1050-1100.
Meh, all the calibers tested will do just fine.

Then why did it penetrate the furthest?
