running from power formation won't work...but that is just my opinion I don't make 5 million a year coaching

The back is seven yards behind the line so that he has time to read the blockers and pick a hole. If you line him up closer you're just guessing where the hole will be. That makes it very easy for defenses to outguess you.
The trend in college football is exactly the opposite of what you're suggesting. Teams like Ms State take a long time getting to the LOS.
