Isn't a 36 ACT score "perfect"? Anyone with a perfect ACT score is getting into any school they wish.

My understanding of what Harvard is doing, is different from this. I believe they are dedicating more endowment money to kids who are smart and can handle the academics, but who are poor and cannot afford to attend, who are smart enough to get in, but maybe not smart enough to get a full academic scholarship.

If you had two people who were both on the border of getting in the school, and their files are just about the same, and one is just slightly more qualified than the other, and the other is much poorer, in order to fufill some sort of social goal, I can see them accepting the slightly (but barely) less qualiifed kid who is poor.

Thats exactly what they are doing. I've tried to explain this to Zach several times but he isn't concerned with reality. He's much more enamored with his off the wall hypotheticals that have no basis in fact.

Yes, a 36 is perfect, but a 36 does not guarantee admission.

If you have one spot, who do you take?

John, a white male, from an affluent zip code, that made a 36?
or
Shanika, a Hispanic female from a poor zip code, who is the first of her family to attend college, and made a 30?

99% of the time, Shanika gets in over John.

Harvard itself doesn't offer merit-based scholarships. Directly from their financial aid page:

quote:

We follow two key principles:

Admission to Harvard is need-blind, meaning your financial need will not impede your chances of admission.
Aid is based entirely on need, not merit.

If you are smart enough to get in, that's it. You're in, and they will ensure you can afford it.

OP is spreading complete bullshite for reasons known only to himself.
