re: is there a good gaming laptop that isn't too expensive?

How about this one?
That Lenovo you linked barely qualifies as a gaming laptop because of the GPU. You'd never hear the end of it about the choppiness of games made in the last year or so.
On the other hand, if you are willing to spend more than $1k, this $1199 ASUS is by far the best value you can get: LINK
If he bitches about gaming performance on that, he deserves to have all of his electronics taken away.
However, there is one other good budget option, and that's this Lenovo Y50 for $889, which would put you within budget. LINK
It's a couple of notches below the ASUS, but way better than the Lenovo you linked in terms of gaming performance. It's the graphics card you need to pay the most attention to. Nothing else matters nearly as much. A common mistake is to think you need an i7 for competent gaming, or that an i7 adds any significant value that makes it more important than a graphics card.
What are the specs (or give me a link) of his desktop? Then I can give you a rough idea of how each of the above laptops would perform compared to the desktop.

NEVER buy anything from alienware. A really good top of the line gaming desktop is going to be at least $2,000.

Well he can buy the best top of the line laptop when he gets a job
I'm sure the desktop I got him wasn't top of the line but he loves it. No complaints at all

I'm somewhat new to building my own PC but those specs looked fine.

This is what's most important though

Both of the laptops I linked would outperform his desktop in gaming. The $1199 ASUS would beat it pretty significantly, actually. Basically, it's just a matter of whether you're willing to spend more -- the superior graphics card in the ASUS would just add a little more longevity to the machine in general. I've had a much older model ASUS ROG laptop for over 4 years now. I don't use it for gaming, but it will still play games (at low settings) because I invested in the top mobile GPU of the time. I paid about the same for mine as the one I linked.
The Lenovo is also a great value considering the price and would still outperform the GTX 650 in your son's iBuyPower. I can't vouch for Lenovo's build quality in their gaming systems though, since I haven't seen a Lenovo in person in a long time, but I'm sure it's pretty standard. They're assembled by Quanta, who also builds Dells/Alienware, HPs etc. and probably use similar chassis materials. I can definitely vouch for the ASUS's build quality from experience.
I would not advise buying any of the other laptops that have been linked thus far. They're all great for productivity (more emphasis on the CPU), but they have weak GPUs that are mostly meant for a bump in GPU-accelerated encoding/rendering in editing and modeling programs, and maybe some very light gaming. They are not well-focused gaming PCs, though, and they would perform noticeably worse than your son's iBuyPower. (the exception being the other Lenovo Y70s that were linked. They have the same GPU as the Lenovo I linked, though, and there's absolutely no reason to spend more for the bump in the CPU).

Great info. Thank you. I'll get one of those depending on my budget at Christmas

Revisit this thread when it gets closer to buying time. Prices shift around, new shite gets released, etc. so there may be something better by November, and there's also Black Friday/Cyber Monday to consider, although most of those sales are targeted toward low-end or mainstream electronics for Joe Blo Consumer.

Good find. Nice specs for the price and I trust the ASUS name.

By November or even late October we'll start seeing laptops with nvidia's 900m series graphics cards. Supposed to have significantly better performance and run much cooler than the 800m series GPUs.

I would look at Lenovo, and Asus.
EDIT: Just read the whole thread. Looks like you're already on the right track here.

Cool, wasn't sure when those were going to drop. They might be at a premium over the 800M series, put the 800M series laptops at a discount, or just simply come out with new laptops and do nothing to the price of the older models in the immediate future -- which is common for PC components.

Paige, you should consider making your son a slave for a little while if you get him one of the ASUS ROGs. Grass to mow, surfaces to dust, baseboards to scrub, etc.

Whatever it would cost...I'd pay double to...you know.....
