The same reason people change their background, ringtone, browser, etc. They like different things...

google it
its basically new UX guidelines in preparation for Android L..giving devs the opportunity to change the way their apps ahead of time.
L (android v5.0) is probably coming out in the next 2 months.

Today Calendar is pretty well known and adds more functionality to Google Calendar with Month/Agenda View and Month/Agenda Full View. It also has the correct day on the actual icon instead of the number 31 all the time. Small features that would be nice for Google Calendar to have but they don't

wasn't that due to a patent dispute with apple?

Looks like it was in the Samsung lawsuit

Below is just a sampling of some of the iPhone features Samsung specifically looked at with the intent of improving their own interface. Some features were copied part and parcel into a number of accused Samsung products:
-Making the date on the calendar app icon dynamic as to reflect the current day

Can you imagine how terrible this Board will be if people create a thread for every app out there, but provide no actual information about the app other than the name?

I have the info in a reply but edited the OP to show the add-ons for the calendar app also

Sorry - nothing to see here.
There may be several reasons:
The app you’re looking for doesn't exist
or
the app developer is not currently running a test
or
you are not eligible to participate in the testing program.
If you received the link to this page from someone, we recommend you contact them for more information.

Did you join the group? Usually it takes about an hour for whoever the developer is to accept people into a Google+ Group, then you can click the Opt-In link and click the become a tester button
