drug cartel crap is media hype or legit.
I don't know about Nuevo Laredo other than by reputation it's about as bad as El Paso/Juarez. I can tell you that the shite going down in Juarez is not media hype and is actually underreported. I'd find another place to hunt.

Ask around for Heisenberg...
seriously - I know a shite ton of people who live in Mexico and the kidnapping is unreal currently. I used to cross the border often and I will no longer risk it.

its a frigging dump. The crime and drugs have put a big damper on the party. Unless you want to go just to say you did, then just get your turtle boots in Cozumel.

I haven't been in about 10 years but the group that I went with still goes, 25-30 years strong, they don't leave the ranch anymore. They know enough people down there that everything is brought to them nowadays.

Took a bus from Laredo (TX) to Monterrey (NL) and back in December. No troubles to report.

stay to the main roads. There are still a lot of Gringo day tourist to the border towns. In crowded places and nicer hotels and restaurants you should be fine.
If you drive in park at a lot with a policeman, give him a $5 or $10. He won't ask for it.
Your car will be safe(r)
Be careful where you go. Know that a lot of the people who have been victims of the violence have in one way or another been a part of some kind of illicit trafficking.
Bottled drinks. Unless Ice is made from bottled water.
Put some token declarations up high in the trunk or back of truck, have the Cubans stashed down low.

1980's trip to Akumal and Isla Mujeres, flew back from Cancun into Houston International wearing boa boats. Not a word was said by customs, this is before TSA.

This is probably a topic for another thread but I HIGHLY doubt you have all of the story. Customs isn't going to keep African game taken legally. Not a fricking chance. Your buddy isn't telling you the whole story.
I had a customer that had a whole Safari worth of animals in their house. They go all the time. Mounted Lion Head, Zebra Pelts, crazy. I had never seen so much.
So you can most definitely bring trophies back, or you could. Maybe the laws just changed.

It was the "endangered" animals on the US list that they seized. He had permits there, paid for at a high price, that allowed him to take them under their laws.
US Customs gave not two fricks what the government over there said. It's on our list, it isn't coming back. At least that is what they told him.

Ask your buddy what animals they seized. I may be able to help him if he's telling the truth. I'm being serious. I doubt he is telling you the truth as to what happened.

Damn, it got a lot worse I guess.

But then again, the Crowne Plaza and the area around it where really nice.

NUEVO LAREDO, Mexico — Even in a city where residents are used to feigning ignorance about the region's drug wars to avoid threats, violence or death, the silence here the week that a former mayor was confirmed dead was deafening.
A forensics team in Monterrey, Nuevo León, said on Tuesday that it identified the body of Benjamín Galván Gómez, according to a statement issued by the Tamaulipas attorney general’s office. Galván, who was mayor from 2011 to 2013, disappeared while en route from Nuevo Laredo to Laredo in late February. He and businessman Miguel Angel Ortiz, an associate of Galván’s, were allegedly kidnapped. Their bodies were found on a highway on the outskirts of Monterrey.

You're misinformed. I have a relative getting taxidermy done right now on a bull elephant he killed early July in botswana.

It's been a few years but I'll be down there hunting in a couple weeks and there's a few things I'd like to take care of across the border.
So you co-star donkey shows every few years? Nice.
ETA: Sea Turtle boots do sound a little fly. Too bad SilkRoad got shut down.
