I've only watched the video once and briefly.
Just speaking of in LA. All bets off in any other state.
Security guard, cashier, loss prevention, whatever. Have a legal authority to stop and detain shoplifters. So the detention is not what is being questioned now just the use of force.
I saw them trying to restrain the guy who was actively resisting them the shoplifter begins biting which would increase the level of force that can be justified. Then the shoplifter produces a box cutter and starts stabbing the loss prevention guys. This makes it a deadly force encounter. They could have used lethal force at that point to defend themselves and would have been justified.
Did they hit him any after he was cuffed?
All of the force used I believe can be justified however that doesn't mean Walmart will stand behind them and it doesn't mean they would not be civilly liable

They beat the frick out of him with malice aforethought after he was on the ground.
I'm sorry, I don't trust second string wal-mart security to be able to make those sort of judgment calls that even trained law officers seem to have trouble with.

the video goes against every bit of normal loss prevention protocol that I've ever been taught. stores don't want the liability.

Umm, there is a difference in being detained and being arrested, which is what they did. Arrest him. They have the authority to arrest him?
