OT scientist- Does mdma disrupt the blood brain barrier?

Was having a discussion would some retard OTer who was trying to convince me that mdma disrupts the blood brain barrier. My argument; it probably does if you are an avid(daily) user ,but if you used it recreationally (one a month) then you're probably fine.

It's time to grow up, mailman.

Disrupt? It certainly passes the blood-brain barrier, that's why it has the serotonergic effect.

I don't know much about it. I just know it acts on serotonin receptors (I think, or maybe it causes the release of serotonin, but either way, serotonin), and I saw one small excerpt in a textbook from a study done on mice that were given something like double the recreational dose of MDMA and it caused a change in amount of neurons/synapses in I forget what area of the brain that was still observed like 5 years out, so it appeared permanent. No changes in brain function were found related to the damage though.
I could google and get some more info, but I'm lazy, do it yourself.

Just one of those casual conversations, neither one of us does it. I just think that, any type of drug can be used as long as the time between usage is spread long enough.
For instance, none of our livers are cirrhosising when we drink 15 beers every Sat during tailgates but if it were every day then that would be a different story.

It causes the serotonin vesicles to release an overly large amount into the synapse.

Well that's actually my point, those studies never test average doses and probably test it on the mice several times a week. No one I would think takes it that much.

The dosage would have to be extremely high to cause real blood brain barrier disruption. More likely from hypothermia induced by MDMA.

Sweet, I get to use this.....
I'd watch out what you post on here about drugs and such, and especially on facebook. The FBI is cracking down on dope-users like yourself, and they're not fricking around. Have fun in jail, junky

This study was one single dose that was like 1.5 or 2 times the rec dose, and then looked at some immediately after and either a year or 5 years after I can't recall exactly.
But, regardless, any mind altering drugs are going to cross the BBB. Not sure what else there is to say about it.

Ricaurte compared the data from monkeys who were given ecstasy dissolved in a liquid twice a day for four days to other monkeys who received the same liquid WITHOUT the ecstasy twice a day for four days. The study showed that the monkeys who were given ecstasy had damage to the serotonin-containing nerve cells. This damage was still visible seven years later!. Areas that were especially affected were the frontal lobe of the cerebral cortex, an area in the front part of the brain that is used in thinking, and the hippocampus, an area deep in the brain that helps with memory. Although damage was still observed seven years later, it was less severe than when it was observed two weeks after drug use. This suggests that some regrowth could have occurred, but that it is far from complete
this is probly the study that you guys are talking about
