Interesting link from instapundit.
Pretty good interactive chart on IRS returns in the US from 1992 until 2011. The IRS used to take two years to compile this data, but now it takes three. They're probably having computer troubles.
About 10 years ago, Craig T Nelson starred in a movie where either the ozone hole or global warming was causing a stampede of Southerners to escape to Canada. The Canucks had closed to border to stem the flood. It's kinda funny the opposite has happened. The only people fleeing norte are Latin Americans. Lots of new folks are talking in a yankee brogue at the Walmarks. That's probably attributable in part to some defense contracts being awarded locally. If the Repubs take the Senate, I'm sure Shelby and Sessions will firmly fix their lips to the govt teat. The next thang you know, most of the folks around here ain't gonna be saying "ain't."
Ah say dose yahnkees mongrals ah gonna be metaphorically miscegenatin' ah suthern heratige. My great great Aunt Alabama, who crossed the Warrior River on horseback to warn about approaching Yankees is spinning in her grave.

My god, you should be whipped with a cane.

If we were all given our just deserts, who among us would escape a whipping?
I'm curious what's happened in the last 3 years. When is the Yankee infestation going to reach the tipping point and turn the South blue?

They are geniuses.
They move south to escape places ran by liberal policy and then vote for the Democrats once they move.

Grab another mint julep Scarlet. The bluecoats have a large expeditionary force just over the border.
I realize it's simplistic to look at that chart and conclude lower taxes is the causal factor for money moving from blue to red. (look at AZ. I figured TX would be the big winner.)

TBH, all the infiltrators so far seem pretty conservative, but that just might be a yankee ruse.

I'm one of the Yankees that moved south. I came from NYC. Taxes and state / local government not spending on the right things were a major reason.
I think the majority of people that have moved, like me, are dissatisfied with state / local government in terms of taxation and government mismanagement. Probably not representative politically of the regions we came from.
I can understand some areas, like Austin, however I see it more the other way of those areas turning the people towards more conservative. Once you start seeing your paycheck increase as a % of gross income and the services remain in the same ballpark.
At the end of the day, people are moving due to fiscal conservative policies.....

There's some of that, but it's more about the weather.

It would be interesting to see that graph on a year by year basis. Instead it covers Billy Jeff, W, and Barry. Maybe the data would be too vague to draw any conclusions. It may just be people moving away from high COL areas which incidentally have high taxes.

quote:If what they of the Northern/Eastern/Midwestern persuasion bring us is "civilization," then I'll pass on it, thanks. What they really bring are their yankee dollars and their bland, unseasoned palates, which translates into restaurants you'd never want to eat in cropping up in your state, city, or town. Just try their version of grits if you don't know what I mean.

Yep, and they move to the southeast from California too. Then vote for liberal policies. They are braindead drones.

Birmingham is wheezing. If Regions moves out, UAB will be the life support machine to keep it going.

quote:Your smugness says a lot about your preferences. If we want to talk culinary achievements and preferences, I live in the heart of immigrant country here in my part of Florida. We live on the edge of the Gulf of Mexico, with seafood sources galore. The native population has been usurped by refugees from Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, PA, NJ, NY and other places North, Midwest, and East. They outnumber the FL natives, bring their accents, their dollars, their total misunderstanding and lack of appreciation for what is Southern/Florida culture and cuisine. Restaurants around here don't offer anything that could be considered by Southerners as well-seasoned seafood, good fried seafood, or anything else with flavor beyond a small shake of salt and pepper. Oh, yeah - at daring moments they pour pepper and tabasco into the pan and call some things "Cajun blackened" this or that. But this is in no way like unto anything we'd recognize in LA. The preferred restaurants are places like Olive Garden, Applebees, Bob Evans, and other similar generic/sysco-laden national chains. The fish of choice down here divides between talapia and mushy grouper. Nobody has even heard of speckled trout. Fried shrimp is always an expensive disappointment. And if some restauranteur does have the nerve to offer something that resembles flavor, you can be sure you'll hear accented people complaining about how it's "too spicey!" It's depressing.
