Must be nice to live in the Matrix where you can slow down time and ponder over those thoughts. In the real world, these officers showed up at a call which I can almost guarantee was dispatched as a shoplifter and were faced with a man holding a knife. They were forced to make a life threatening decision in the time it takes you to wipe your arse and they chose to go home to their families.

Anyone criticizing these cops for shooting a dude aggressively approaching them with a fricking knife has likely never been attacked with a knife. Its easy for people to criticize the police from the comfort of their couches but having had a good friend on the force, I can tell you that you have no fricking clue what officers deal with. Constantly dealing with the dregs of society cussing you for no reason, traffic accidents with decapitated bodies, beaten children and women, and occasionally people brandishing weapons threatening to harm you.
Its pretty simple, brandish a weapon and show intent to threaten a police officer and you should expect to be shot. I do understand the concern of some that this man was not right in the head, but honestly is anyone threatening a police officer with a weapon "right in the head"? Its sad, but these officers have families that they love and support. Cases like this, while sad, should be pretty clearly justified.

I only watched the video once and it was not very clear. But it seemed the cops shot at least 10-12 times and several times after the perp hit the ground.

Hard to tell he has a knife, but doesn't change much. Pretty justified, though I wonder if it's normal procedure for police to exit the cruiser with guns already drawn for simple shoplifting? Did he brandish the knife when he stole the 2 cans of soda? Seems extreme, but again don't have a problem with their use of force in the end. Just think exiting the car with guns already drawn may have escalated the situation.

Why does this matter other than adding to the tragic nature? If a mentally ill person is threatening your person the fact that they're mentally ill doesn't make them less of a threat.

And so you expect the police to make that assessment and do something different because it's possible the one threatening them is mentally ill?

Now granted, I don't know the situation..why did they not have tasers to use? Are these cops not issued them? Are they trained to pull guns when it's a deadly weapon instead of the taser?
Didn't you know that the prevailing paradigm for law enforcement now is that they themselves above all other people must go home safely at night?
They will shoot you if you threaten them in any way. They know they won't get in trouble for it. They are trained to do it.

The guy shooting this video says he had a gun
This is live video. The man says he has a gun. then says he didn't have a gun.

He was in aggressive posturing when they arrived and had a hand concealed in a pocket. I don't know many who wouldn't have had guns drawn when they got out in that situation.

All of this. You know you're talking to someone that doesn't know what they're talking about when they suggest shooting an assailant in a moving appendage.
yep. greater chance of missing the target, thus a greater chance of bullet hitting something un-intended.

Cops had their guns drawn because 1.) A shoplifting suspect that normally would have fled the scene was sticking around out front and pacing, showing a dangerous state of mind and 2.) he had his right hand in his pocket, showing that there was most likely some kind of weapon he was waiting to pull.

Sheriff said never. Said all officers are trained in the importance of NEVER trying to "wing" someone coming at them that is a threat. Center mass shots only until the person stops coming. Period.
I am a firm supporter of the 2nd Amendment and a person's right to defend themselves, but I am starting to believe we should question this belief.

Well, they could have tazed that man.
There was a cop in Ouachita parish that went after a guy with a taser. The guy had a gun hid and shot and killed the officer. His wife lost a husband and their kids will go through life without a father.
I don't feel bad for people who pull this dumb shite. If they think they are bullet proof let them try. Our society will be better off without them in it.

so was this guy unarmed? people saying he had a knife, but I don't see a knife in the video
Posted on 8/21/14 at 6:51 pm to monsterballads
what does it matter if he was armed? He approached the officers aggressively after he was told to take his hands out of his pockets and stand still.
His mental state, and what weapon/s he had or did not have are irrelevant.
Follow the law.
Follow the officers orders.
Police your own community and the cops wont have to.
Do things in that order and you will never have problems.
