Was there information released that the guy had a knife?
You can clearly hear the cops yelling for him to put down a knife. And the dude with the red hat screamed, "DROP IT, BRO!" just before they shot him.

A very wise man once said: "Play stupid arse games, win stupid arse prizes."

Russian. I told you. Reports confirm he pulled a knife. Look it up.
And you can see him pull it out of his pocket and flick his wrist(as if to open the blade).

I didn't realize the perp had just stolen from the store and I did not see a knife in the video. I'm going to have to watch again and look harder.
The bottom line is the perp should have never gotten into an aggressive posture with the cops.
On the flip side it seems like the cops could have demonstrated a little more prudence. They seem a bit trigger happy. But God bless'm. They're doing a job I absolutely would never want.

After his right hand comes out of his pocket, it sounds like the cops say "drop the knife". Not sure, though.

So the video guy is all amused at the guy for getting ready to confront to police, knowing he was looking for a confrontation.. then when it happens.. oh my god.. they just killed that guy!

I don't understand why, if they're working in pairs, one officer doesn't deploy a taser while the other deploys his firearm.

The whole video, the way it was recorded way before the recorder got to the individual, to the way the vehicles were parked to not allow the police to get to the flat spot there, to the crazy ending, it neurotic at best.

No. But, he did have his hand in that pocket and he did go to the high ground and he did keep advancing.
I just re-watched it 3 times zoomed in as much as my iPad would allow.
The guy took his hand out of his pocket almost simultaneously with the cops emerging from their vehicle. He never put his hands back in his pockets. He walked towards the cops on the sidewalk and then jumped up on the higher ground to the viewer's left of the sidewalk. It looks like his right hand is closed in a fist or maybe holding something. I don't see a blade or anything protruding from his fist but that doesn't mean there wasn't something there.
You can hear the cops yelling at him but I can't make out the words. He doesn't lunge at the cops but he keeps walking towards them. When he reaches the wall about to jump down to the sidewalk, the shooting starts.
Someone early in this thread described it as "suicide by cops." That seems applicable.

I couldn't see anything in the hands, but couldn't have if there was. To me, it sounded as though he was told to "drop the knife". And then he approached within 5 or 6 feet of the officer on the left before shots fired.
With the video taken so far before it happened, it showed his mental state and how he intended to be confrontational. I would think this one will be ruled justified.

"drop the knife" or "put down the knife"
I do not recall and don't really want to re-watch.

Thorough analysis. I agree and believe he was wielding a knife in his right hand.

The guy sat the drinks down and was obviously waiting on the cops so he could confront them.
The guy committed suicide by cop. He pulled out a knife and advanced on the police as they told him several times to drop his weapon.
It does look possible that he could have been tazed had one of the cops had one out and ready but they didn't. That does not change the fact that this was suicide by cop.

His actions are completely on him. However, I would lay some blame on the sensationalism of media and folks like Sharpton, that has surrounded Ferguson. The situation is so hyped, it's creating a frenzy.

I've watched it several times and the cops clearly yell "Drop the knife."
ETA, they say the entire phrase "Drop the knife" at least four times with a couple of "Drop it's" thrown in here and there.

He absolutely deserved to be shot. There is no question about it.
ETA: And even if he had no knife, he deserved to be shot. The way his hands were in his pockets, the large sweat jacket, the non-compliant, aggressive confrontation... etc. Those cops have NO IDEA what he's capable of. As others have said, they will go home with their families. I say all this as a libertarian type guy. You have to have a civil society. He decided to call their bluff, and they obliged him.
