Go to Texas or Tennessee.

Nevermind

Yeah. I want to see mountains.

It's not silly at all. As long as you don't believe a geographic change is some key to happiness. I have a big and very close and supportive family here in LA. That's the thing that kept me here. Otherwise I'd be fishing for rainbow trout instead of the speckled variety.

Oh, I'm not naive about it. I just want to experience a different region. I've lived in the South almost all my life. And, LA is a great place to live.
For the meantime, though, we're staying here. I don't want to leave my stepdaughter behind. Her father and his family are here, and she's really close to her great grandparents. I don't want to keep her from them.

Dude. I just nailed it last page. Colorado. (North Carolina).
But Colorado seems great. Plus, law firms don't drug test, so you can do the pot too if you wish.

Well, I don't do drugs. I hope they wouldn't hold that against me.

spent last summer out there and been wanting to go back to live every since. I wonder how many others have the same dream...oh well, back to reality. One thing that helped me adjust was sitting down and figuring out what type of case/client was bringing the most stress. I eliminated that area of practice entirely. I now handle shareholder/partnership disputes, and there is more of them than you would think, and estate matters. I deal with a totally different type client who generally has more realistic expectations

Just finished law school and already heading in a different (although related) direction

Hell, my only experience with Colorado (and the West) was seeing Denver from the air and the airport. Then the red rocks outside of Vegas. Then down to Hoover dam.
Definitely will do something more comprehensive in the future.
Going to California (San Fran) for the first time next month. Pretty excited about heading out that way. I can see why people became enamored with "The West."

What's your plan (if you don't mind me asking)? Just curious what other paths could be. And are you deviating from the typical path because of reasons that other people in this thread have cited? Disillusionment, tired of the bullshite, not worth the stress, etc.?

I'm getting a masters in a specialty field (criminal justice). Having clerked for three summers I know 'traditional' law isn't for me. I've enjoyed where I've worked as a clerk, but yea, I know I would hate the general career. I have attorneys lament to me all the time how it dictates their life and how they aren't particularly happy, although that's definitely not always the case. I have my mind on policy and government, so I'm really just hoping to use my JD to advance my career. Hope that makes sense.

Been at it ten years in November. Still love it. Competition for grown ups. And I damn sure ain't qualified to do anything else. But, I don't answer to anyone, nor have to bill hours. Guess that helps.

I do some of this, and I do enjoy it.

Are you in solo practice?

Definitely
In my experience, often times people are either unbelievably happy practicing or completely miserable, and a lot of the contributing factors on either side stem from who they work with or for. I find that some of the people on the miserable side just blindly jumped into law school and the legal practice without REALLY vetting it out and deciding if it's what they truly want to do. Some people just aren't wired for it and try to fit a square peg in a round hole, often times for obvious reasons ($$$/putting food on the table).

This is the ticket. The risks in starting your own gig are very, very real but I'd imagine it would be incredibly fulfilling.

Yea, that would have been my case. I know it's not for me. But I knew a JD would be helpful, if not essential, for the careers I am interested in pursuing. I'm just glad I've resisted giving in and joining the profession. It's still a great degree to have, but like you said, if you become a lawyer for a lack of any other viable career you may be miserable.

Denver has lots of o&g jobs. You could find an in house landman job that probably gives you a bump in pay and a giant reduction in stress.
