My brother found this in his yard in Covington. He plans on keeping it around but doesn't know what kind it is. Any help is appreciated.

Juvenile black racer. He's a good'un.

I know it's not a poisonous one. Looks like a good one to keep around to keep the rodent population down.

His pattern looks awesome!

That's a not-dead-enough snake.

It really does. He's planning on keeping it as a pet for his son/my godson. We always had a snake or 3 as pets growing up, so no chance of him offing a good snake.

The general consensus here is that he is not poisonous...................so you should be able to just chop his head head off with a shovel or something, no need to break out the heavy artillery for this one.

Thanks!

Doesn't look like a poisonous snake.
I tend to kill them when in doubt. When I'm sure it's harmless, I'll relocate it to the wooded area down the street.

He'll grow out of that pattern, unfortunately. I'm 100% positive on it being a racer. Never heard of them being kept as pets but they don't seem very aggressive.

BOOM! First answer!
I'm impressed. This is one that often gets misidentified even on the snake forums.

They're generally considered somewhat difficult to keep. A young one like this is probably feeding on mostly lizards. And they're usually very spastic, difficult to tame, and bitey. But, it could be done.

It's a black racer, usainits boltis.
If not careful it will grow into a west African gaboon viper. Bitis gabonica

He did say this one won't stop striking at him.
