When I was in Fallujah I was up on a rooftop with our forward air controller one night. We saw about 15 to 20 bad guys move across the street into a house about 300 meters down the road. The FAC looked at me and said check this shite out dude. He called up the spectre and talked him on to the house. Then the pilot shot an infrared beam down to the ground to confirm the target location. The beam was on the house next door to the target building. The FAC told the pilot "no, it's the one next door." So the beam slid over to the next and house and the FAC said "Yep, that's the one. Light it up." About a minute later 105mm artillery shells started pounding the building. Then a few seconds later you could the soft boom.......boom.......boom from the sky. It was crazy.

AC-130H Gunship

The new AC-130W which was in use in RC(E) when I was there doesn't even have a 105 anymore. That's all cool stuff but pointless in reality. In fact unless the 130 is already on target 9 times out of 10 the JTAC is calling in the AWT for CAS in a JAAT with A-10s. That was my experience in Mountain warfare in RC(E).

They attack from 5 to 10 thousand feet with the 105. Got to see it several times in iraq

Yeah, this was back in 04. I don't know the exact model they were using then. It was during the battle of Fallujah so they were just circling overhead all night begging for targets.

Those things must have some kind of special targeting software to nail the target while moving several hundred miles/hour from 2 to 3 miles high above the ground. Impressive.
A nice read here

The new AC130W used to be called the MC130, its design is for urban environments. The AF didnt replace the 105 on all airframes, just adapted to the current threat. Both are still in the inventory.

JTAC=Joint Terminal Attack Controller. That's the guy that talks to the pilot and tells him where to bomb.
CAS=Close Air Support
RC (E)= Regional Command East. That's the command in charge of the Eastern portion of Afghanistan. Think, Lone Survivor or the documentary Restrepo.
JAAT= ? Maybe Joint Air Attack Team?
AWT= No fricking clue.

They have been doing that since Vietnam without the use of special software...

That was horrible...I'm sure I'm in the minority. Of possibly the only one. It makes me feel better knowing that if they could've blown that plane up...they would've.

Fun fact: When you call in support from that bad motherfricker, you see and feel the explosion on the ground before you hear the report of the shot from the plane.
105 shells shake the fricking ground.
The test range at Eglin is the tits.
The class I was supposed to graduated with got to call in night fire in block three b/c the CO pulled some strings
