Most of these polls test market share globally. iPhone usage outside the US is a lot smaller than here. Mostly because Apple products are priced quite highly in those markets.
Android takes a huge jump in the market share because of developing countries and such. No one in Africa is going to be able to afford an iPhone while Android is selling well. Heck in some places, Blackberry holds the leading market share for some reason.
The statistics to look at are mostly US and first world countries usage. Apple holds 42% market share in the US, more than Samsung, LG, and Motorola combined. Even adding in HTC, Android only holds 45.7%. That's not a huge discrepancy by an rate imaginable.
And Apple's profit margins are much larger than any of the Android manufacturers, meaning they are fine with how they are doing.
