So I was looking through an extremely extensive family tree that my uncle put together on ancestry.com, and stumbled upon a great great great great grandfather named Emery D. Potter. There was a Wikipedia article about him that my uncle included, and it turns out he was a US representative from Ohio.
I thought it was pretty cool, then I found out this on his wiki page:

If it is any consolation a democrat in 1845 was politically a lot closer to conservative than a republican from today.

I love finding out things about my ancestors. I was related to Clara Barton, founder of Red Cross.
I was related to Gen. Robert E. Lee
My Great Great Great Grandfather owned the Destrehan Plantation in New Orleans and was one of the wealthiest businessman in Louisiana. My family used to have plantations on the land that LSU was eventually built on.

The Republicans didn't come into existence until the 1850's.

Same here. My family pretty much owned all of what is now Donaldsonville prior to the Civil War.
