Breakfast Club.
Went to Kenilworth Middle @ 1980 with a guy who was absolutely just like Bender on the Breakfast Club in almost every way. You would have thought they'd used him for the model.
So that character rang true for me, at least in casting the 80's type they were going for with Bender.

Breakfast Club and Can't Buy Me Love.
ETA: Both of these are comedies/dramas according to IMDb, so I'm going to go with them since I could actually see the characters in these movies actually existing at some high school during the 80s.

Loved them all.
I can still hear Plimsouls, Payolas, Oingo Boingo, Talking Heads, Billy Idol,etc..blasting away..Deborah Foreman, Molly Ringwald, Mary Stuart Masterson, Lea Thompson,etc..in big hair.

Great 80's movie...
And Bret Easton Ellis captures that decade about as good as anyone.
I thought it sucked arse compared to the book

The breakfast club. Has a character representation from many walks of life, dealing with life in the 1980s.

(Fast Times was too early - it's almost a little late 70's vibe to it)
It captured the early 80's perfectly. I was 14 when it came out and can relate to the music and spirit of the times. Great movie. Breakfast Club captured the mid-80's to a T.

Every time I hear Somebody's Baby by JB that scene in FT is immediate.
Breakfast Club covers the spectrum best IMO
