What they do now can be fun and sometimes musically enjoyable, but it's not Widespread Panic. It's something else.
Houser was the creative heartbeat. The rest were riding his coattails. They still do on the catalogue of music he left them. they haven't put two decent songs on an album since his untimely death.
Houser is one of only a few guitar players who I can hear hit two notes and I know exactly who I'm listening to. It was so unique, you either love it or hate it.
RIP Mikey.
Excellent post - I agree with all of this. RIP Mikey.

Do you think Jimmy Herring is a talented guitarist?

Yep. I gave George a shot in late 2002, and it was dreadful. I've watched a few webcasts of WSP with Jimmy, and it still doesn't do much for me. Respect them for forging on, and I'm sure that's what Mikey wanted them to do, but it just doesn't move me like it used to.

I was reading an old Jerry Garcia interview the other day that sums up pretty well how I feel about this. Here's the part:
quote:
What are your views of young guitar players now?
Well, it’s a little hard for me to listen. The thing is, they’re much more accomplished than they used to be, but that just means that the instrument itself has a much better book than it used to have. The electric guitar has an enormous vocabulary and several different kinds of mediums, all of which have expanded enormously in the last 10, 15 years. That’s all to the good – it just means the instrument has expanded. But young players, even if they’re really brilliant technically, there’s a thing like a guy like John Lee Hooker or somebody like that who can play two or three notes so authoritatively on a guitar. There’s like 60 years of real mean person, right, who can scare the pants off you in one or two notes played with such immense authority and such soulfulness. There’s that, and that’s a real thing. For me, I’d much rather hear something like that than a lot of facility.
Do you ever listen to people like Eddie Van Halen?
Not seriously, no. Because I can hear what’s happening in there. There isn’t much there that interests me. It isn’t played with enough deliberateness, and it lacks a certain kind of rhythmic elegance that I like music to have, that I like notes to have. There’s a lot of notes and stuff, but the notes aren’t saying much, you know. They’re like little clusters. It’s a certain kind of music which I understand on one level, but it isn’t attractive to me.
That sums up pretty much how I feel.
I've seen Jimmy play with Panic, I've seen Jimmy play with The Allman Brothers, I've seen Jimmy play with The Dead... I've seen Jimmy imitate my favorite guitar players of all time. Some I feel he does better than others. What I've never seen Jimmy do is write a piece of his own music that I want to hear. I don't like ARU. I don't like hardly any post Mikey Panic songs.
Jimmy Herring to me is a master imitator. You asked if I think he is talented. Yes, it only takes seeing the guy play the instrument for a few minutes to see that he has completely mastered the electric guitar. His playing very rarely makes me feel anything and he's never written a piece of music that I like. Mikey, Duane, Dickey, Jerry, Trey, Warren, Anders; these are my favorite guitar players. Most of them probably aren't as gifted guitar players as Jimmy or could spout on about the theory of the instrument like he can. Their guitar work made me feel something though and they wrote songs that I love.
I hope that makes sense.

yep...very much so. But, at the same time, it's not the same. It just isn't.
Don't get me wrong, I still listen to them and will be seeing them when they play the orpheum here in this fall. It is still very enjoyable to see/hear them play and we'll have a blast as always.

Agree 100%. It is something the dumbass post-Mikey WSP fans on here just can't wrap their heads around.

Nobody who likes WSP prefers Herring over Mikey.
To stop going to a show and having fun because someone died just makes you sound like a douche

Can we not trash up the RIP Houser thread?

quote:This. And I agree with almost everything UPT said. I enjoy Jimmy because he's not trying to copy everything about Mikey, he's just going out and doing his thing. It might not be as good but the high intensity is still there and I love every other member of the band so I almost always have a blast.

Nailed it. Couldn't have said it better myself. Of course it is different, but that doesn't mean it is bad. I completely understand why some older fans might feel the way they do with Jimmy in the band. There is nothing wrong with that. I'm just happy they are still playing at the level they do. The lingering lead will never be reproduced and that's how it should be. I personally think Mikey would be proud of where the band is today.

Today is always very hard for me. I miss him and think about him at least once a day. Ill never forget driving down the interstate and getting the call that broke my heart. We all knew it was coming, but that didn't make one bit easier. I'm so grateful for all the smiles he put on my face all those years. I was lucky enough to meet and get to know him somewhat in the early days, and as good of a musician as he was he was even better person. I would give up so much just to have one more beer or hear him play one more song.
He died on my birthday. Hard to forget.

I'm right there with you on most of what you said, but ARU is freaking awesome.

FWIW, a lot of my friends and I started seeing Panic in the early 90's and none of us stopped seeing them simply because Mikey died. Some still go to hometown shows, but for most us the music just doesn't move us anymore. Sorry if that upsets some of the younger fans.

Exactly this for me. Some of my friends are die hards still. I'll go see a show close by but probably not gonna travel for a three day run.
