Tricks to teach a young golfer

This is my seven-year old. He took lessons from Hank Haney's place up here in DFW. He vastly improved and while his best distance is still just under 140 yards, his accuracy is getting really good.
I take him to Top Golf in DFW where he has fun shooting at targets, but I want to help him work on his distance. His take away on the backswing is great. It falls apart just a little over the top, and I wonder if that might be affecting him? He's not generating the clubhead speed on his follow through, yet, to get any real energy through the ball. Need suggestions on how I can help him when we're together working on it. (yes, I know... send him back for more lessons). Top Golf is great because it creates a fun atmosphere instead of just pounding away on the driving range.
Yes. He's a Ricky Fowler fan.

I'm so glad my dad let me do my own thing growing up

Shorten the backswing. He's probably losing balance taking it so far past parallel.

just have him work on being consistent with short game and such.. distance will come as he gets older and transitions. good fundamentals are key.

I wish my parents would have made me do stuff like this when I was that age. I did a few summer golf camps and hacked it around when I could. Only time I really played serious was when I was with my grandpa. Who knows where I could be now if I had been made to take it more seriously like hubba's son.

just let him hit it how he likes right now, even if you changed something he won't have the muscle memory for it to stick for another 4-5 years. chances are by the time he turns 11-12 you should be getting him lessons but for now, just let it ride

dude it's a 7yo just let him whack the ball around and have fun with his Daddy

some kids are competitive and want to be better
how do you know he's forcing it down the kids throat?

Turning the hips is where the power comes from. Club lag also generates power when you hinge and unhinge your wrists to whip the club through the ball at impact.
The wrist thing may be a little advanced for him. But he can work on turning his hips and shifting his weight.

Looks like a young Mickelson taking the club past parallel.
But yeah as posted already, I think a shortened backswing would help, but it depends on the player.
Mostly focusing on him head still and watching through contact would be good early lessons. Also, exerting more energy closer to ball contact (ie not wasting it at the top of the downswing) is another good lesson.
Does he play baseball? If so, "pulling the ball to right field" could have an adverse effect on his golf swing development.

It's possible the fact that he's 7 has a lot to do with that. You sound like you take yourself too seriously. No one should invest emotionally in their kids athletics until puberty. Until then, relax.

Really. I wish I had been more serious and had the desire and drive to be a pro when I was that age. Me and Eldrick could have been best of friends growing up.

Let him swing however he wants now. When he hits puberty, his swing will change constantly until he finishes growing. Then you can spend $$ on lessons.
For now, I'd get him to focus on chipping and putting. Feel is something that you can't teach, it comes with lots of time practicing. And if he's that much into golf at 7, he could be a short game master by the time he's in high school.

You should get him the Joey D Golf workout DVDs those are supposed to help increase distance. He looks like he's not on any type of workout regimen so this should help.

I would focus on just getting a consistent swing/contact. Dont worry about distance.
At his age, you can drop a ball in the fairway at any distance and make a "hole" for him. So you can really just tailor the holes to how far he hits it.
