In 1998, Tom Hanks was nominated for Saving Private Ryan but lost out to Roberto Benigni. Also, Cate Blanchett (Elizabeth) lost out to Gwyneth Paltrow (Shakespeare In Love).

Reese W. - Election
Amy Adams - Junebug
Streep - Devil Wears Prada

Maybe not celebrated, but some of the most convincing characters you will ever find.

Andy Serkis should have gotten it for The Two Towers. People will remember his performance 50 years from now. How many of you can remember Chris Cooper in Adaptation (or even the movie itself) even now?

Tom Cruise should have won for Interview with the Vampire.

Paul Newman should have won for Nobody's Fool.

I absolutely agree with others who posted Bill Murray for Lost in Translation and Leo in The Aviatior.

And looking back, it's borderline criminal that Anthony Perkins wasn't even nominated for Best Actor for Psycho. I know the Academy loves to hate on thrillers/horror, but it's crazy to think he wasn't even nominated (Janet Leigh was for Best Supporting Actress).
