Why do you think they call him The Joker?

"Where are you?" on the phone. It's a land line. No such thing as cell phones. And even if this were a situation where someone said a figure of speech that did not completely apply, nobody would ever have a reason to say "where are you" until cell phones were invented.
I disagree...I take it to mean "why aren't you here?" in this context.

That kills me in Entourage, literally every phone call is ended with no bye or later.

I don't say bye in real life. I usually just say, "alright" or "alright man" depending on who I'm talking to. It sends a pretty clear message that the conversation is over.

Yes. Today, it has come to mean that. But that would not be the case in the 1960s for the reasons I have stated.

I recall using "where are you?" on landlines (pre-cell days) many times when calling people who were late or presumably "no-showing".
I think Betty (in the stated example)used it as a way to quickly hit upon the fact that Don forgot. By answering the question, he's either going to respond to the actual question and have her rip into him, or her tone will likely cause him to ask himself "where should I be?!?"

Damn you David Goyer.
I would like to add
"I know you're trying to figure out where I hang my cape"
followed shortly by
"I grew up in Kansas"
anyway, didn't they think it was weird smallville was a focal point for the invading aliens?

I always have a problem when characters make vague or foreboding statements to another character (no one talks like that in the first place) and the two characters stare at each other in silence until the scene cuts. The other character is never like, "Ugh what? What do you mean?"
Happens a lot and always bothers me.
