i don't get not selling the mercedes, they could have sold it and bought a safe reliable 7500-10k car and been just fine and had plenty on top for groceries and living expenses. I guess that makes too much sense.

She called it a Kompressor, but that's not the model of the car, that refers to the 4 cylinder compressed injection engine. It was probably a base model SLK or C Class coupe. Which both sold for less than 30 grand brand new iirc, so they wouldn't have gotten more than 7 to 10 for it used anyway. After buying a another car that doesn't leave much for living expenses.
And in the article she admitted that they probably could have sold it but that they never thought about being poor and needing to get rid of their nice things, they just thought they needed a new job and it was taking too long to find one.

Yeah, but then they'd actually drive a car that represents their economic status, and that just won't do.
