Drowned While Trying to Save A Dog

Just read an article on FB about a LA man who drowned over the weekend trying to save his dog in a pond. RIP to that man but I have to ask this. Do people not realize that dogs can swim? Probably better than most humans too. Dogs don't normally require saving from ponds or lakes etc.
Read that the dog was found safe on the bank while man died. Sad and I wish he would have just waited for dog to swim back to shore. They will eventually.

I would do anything for my dog, so irrational thought is not that crazy.

I think the point of the op is the fact that it wasn't necessary that someone die for the dog because the dog could swim on its own.
So, would you sacrifice an unnecessary death for your dog?

Yep, I'd lay down my life for my dog.
As to how well they swim, depends on the breed. Some aren't the swimmers you think they are.

Does irrational thought make you forget your dog can swim? I guess I can see if dog is having issues swimming in a rapid current situation like a strong river, but a pond?

I wouldn't purposely die for my dog, but I'd probably do a lot of dumb shite trying to save him.

My FBD would nose over like a popping cork. He definitely isn't allowed near deep water.

god damn. i thought people on TD were crazy about their dogs but this is a new level. i could see making an emotional decision on the spot to risk your life to save the dog (trying to save the dog from drowning, for example), but to go right out and say you'd lay down your life for your dog is just plain nuts.

Crazy dog people are nut jobs.

i would probably do anything for my dog if it were in trouble... a pond wouldnt be trouble because a lab has webbed feet and is pretty good in the water.

Watched a buddy's dog run off a pier once and sit there struggling bobbing up and down for a minute or two before it literally went under. We all were staring at each other like we should do something, and Buddy jumped in and saved dog. So to answer your question...no, not all dogs can swim.

Yea. Wouldn't "sacrifice" myself for the dog but would take some risks if he was in trouble.

mine wont even go by the pool, unless my baby is in the pool.
he has fallen in quite a few times and can dog paddle for a minute of so. much after that he is going to the bottom

My uncle I never remember meeting drowned while duck hunting in the winter. His lab got caught up in some weed and was drowning.
RIP Uncle Pat.
