That example was definitely a head-scratcher. Libertarians often disagree with conservatives about the war on drugs, foreign policy, military spending, gay marriage, etc... But because they also tend to not be fans of the welfare state, they're exactly the same according to DS.
Yeah, I think he's drunk.
There's no consensus here on a variety of subjects. Hell, even most conservatives agree with some kind of welfare.
We have anarchist, conservatives, libertarians, hybrids, liberals, moderates (both parties)

Oh, ok. We're all Americans, so yeah....by your example there's no diversity of thought on this board, no matter how we disagree at times.
maybe i can put it another way:
the GOP has, in modern times, had 2 major tents. The family values, religious right types who care mostly about social issues and the "fiscal" conservatives who have never really given a damn if guys wanted to bang each other they just want lower taxes all the time.
Since the bailouts in mid 2008 it has become fashionable for that second group to start calling themselves "libertarians". They (understandably) don't want to be associated with the social issues faction of the GOP and are disillusioned with party leaders. They are either trying to wrestle control away from them via the ron pauls of the world or have gone full gary johnson and actually left the party over it.
Those are the types of libertarians we have on this board. At heart they still self identify as "conservative" (even if they don't admit it).
There are other types of libertarians out there, but by and large they don't really exist here nor is the type you're describing sufficiently different enough to separate them completely from the general right wing thought that dominates the board.

I can't honestly say that there are a lot of liberals on this board, but I think he's way off about conservatives and libertarians being essentially the same.

i would say many of you have lost objectivity about it. as neither a conservative nor a libertarian i can look at both "groups" dispassionately and assess you much better than you can yourselves.

I see. Your problem is your own bias, thinking you have the ability to read minds and know the heart of man.
It's highly possible that GOP'ers and those who vote third party for president have very different ideals in the political arena.
Social conservatives and libertarian leaning folks disagree far more than they agree. I'll bet you that most of those "Libertarians" agree with you on more issues than they do the social conservative.

That would depend on whether you came into the situation with neither a negative nor positive view of either groups, a stance I don't believe you hold. I would state that you already have negative views of the groups, thus skewing your opinions.
That aside, I agree with you that many call themselves libertarians despite their actual political stances.
But, like I said in my previous post, who gives a shite?

I don't know if you're trolling or just have lost touch with the real world.

They aren't on "his side" so they are all the same.

You're right, it really isn't all that important. I completely understand not wanting to be lumped in with conservatives so go ahead and call yourselves whatever you want.
I addressed the real issue and it was glossed over:
quote:
the only thing i expect is open mindedness, which is in short supply here. Many on here think their way is the only way and the media has "brainwashed" all these people who don't agree with them. Or that the issues the right has had isn't with them but the fact that women are allowed to vote.

Let's not forget ds called the economist a right wing rag once.

As for me, I have conservative leanings fiscally, liberal leanings socially, and attempt to keep a realistic view if situations, not always successfully.
I'd probably call myself a classical liberal, but I'm sure that could be disputed.

That is also the reason I like talking with the Democrats on here. They offer something different.
The issue arises when people claim racism or sexism or blah blah blah.
Keep the emotions out of it, and the discussion will go places. That is a lesson everyone should take to heart.
I just skip over the stupid posts.

to be completely honest, i had a brain fart and was thinking of the weekly standard when i made that comment.
i had read an article in the economist not long before that i thought was off base and had a healthy amount of right wing fallacies in it but in general they are fair.

And the wall street journal too.
And cited the daily show with John Stewart as an actual newscast along with media matters as actual news as well.

media matters, while admittedly focused solely on right wing media, does a pretty good job.

Would depend entirely on your ideology. It feeds those who crave information to satisfy their extreme bias.

What the hell do people expect the bent to be on a LOUISIANA forum? I'm sure if you go to a New England patriots board or Rutgers forum, their poliboard equivalent is entirely democratic.
Perhaps, but this board also skews further to the right than just about any other similar board I've seen in SEC/B12 country.

Are there a lot of other SEC websites with such active political boards?

not really, unless you really believe that everything Fox and Rush say are the gospel truth like some here
