The Home Depot will also employ a lot more "local" people than the little mom and pop, so I don't think you can make the comparison based on % of the dollar that stays in the community. The % may be lower at the chain store, but the volume is typically much much greater.

I'm done with this thread.

I'd say this number would amp up quite significantly if said product purchased was local as well.
I'd say I have a 12" dick but......I don't.

86% of all statistics are 67% wrong.

For every $100 you spend at locally owned businesses, $68 will stay in the community. What happens when you spend that same $100 at a national chain? Only $43 stays in the community.*
How much does the 100 bucks take you when "shopping local" as opposed to purchasing from a national chain?

This was my thought as well. Typical of the OP trying to make everything a black or white scenario and then introducing ridiculous analogies or references.

You are right. I am wrong. Walmart is good for your city. Buying local is bad. Wear smily face T-shirt and Geaux BR.
Never leave.
Never leave.

That's $8,300,000.00 more wealth for the parish if everyone in the parish spent just $100.00 more over the course of a given year with local business on the same product over a chain, pretty much one mid week shop at the grocery store a year.
are we also taking into account the lost employment and lost income spent due to higher prices (and less shopping)?
or are we assuming the same spending patterns and employment numbers?

By shopping locally, you're supposed to get better quality, a knowledgeable friendly staff, and better customer service. Sadly that is not the case, so I just buy stuff wherever I feel like it

So how do we take into account the money we won't be able to spend at local businesses because of their higher prices?

This is so damn misunderstood. I dare you to randomly pick 10 grocery items and go buy the list from Walmart and from a local grocer. I think you will be surprised at the small amount of savings, if any. Maybe $2.
Walmart (or places like them) does have some cheap stuff, but they know which items to hit you on. And on real merchandise, well you end up buying another within a years time because the first one breaks.
When you shop local, you are much more likely to get after the sale service or warranty issues. The local guy has a higher stake in making you happy.

question: what does this have to do with walmart?

You frick yourself every time you spend at chains. You just think you're winning. You voted to remain a serf, and your condition will never improve, because you no longer own the very city you live in. Out of state investors and corporations do, and they OWN you and your marketplace. Furthermore, you make it very difficult to get into the free market yourself.
Much derp
