well said. Nintendo has always been a long term thinking company and continues to be. They don't overreact and they understand quality control.

Call it stubborn but the NES would have been scrapped in the USA and we wouldn't be where we are today if not for that mentality.

Not a far comparison. Wii U is doing far worse. It's tracking behind the Dreamcast still. People suddenly like the Wii U here, but they forget how terribly it's selling.

The Wii U got out to a slow start but has recently picked up and last I checked is sandwiched between PS4 and xbox 1 in consoles sold

Wii U has gone from 20k/week WW to about 60k/week WW. It's picked up because of MK8 and cheaper options of a Wii U. It'll continue to fall because there isn't any major software until Zelda U (Bayonetta 2, Zelda Warriors, etc will not move a significant amount of HW).

The 3DS was only able to recover because of giant price drops and a lot of big software. You'll also see that the 3DS really isn't selling very well. It might not even do half of what the DS did.

Edit: I will say, I'm not commenting on the quality of games or what the Wii U offers. People just don't quite realize how possible it is that it doesn't pass the Gamecube.

My point is not the number specifically, just that they think long term and stick with what they believe in. The market is obviously very different now from then.

Don't forget about Smash Brothers, that's a big seller. I think Hyrule Warriors will sell well too just because of what it is.

No one thinks it's going to set records in sales but the point is that it's not a lost cause.

And repeating SEGA's mistake of chruning out consoles and scrapping this is a good idea?

Smash will move consoles. Watchdogs+Bayonetta+Hyrule will move a few, specifically in Japan. Mario Kart will keep the churn high enough. It will break 8.5-9 million post New Year's and stay ahead of the Xbox One. And that's a good spot to be in.

You'll also see that the 3DS really isn't selling very well. It might not even do half of what the DS did.

But the 3DS is a success and it does make a profit on unit sales. And very few consoles will do half of what the DS did. Not a good comparison.

You mean you aren't commenting on quality? Gamecube's 21 million sales at that time was terrible, but looking back it wasn't so bad. That's the generation that console gaming completely changed and Nintendo just didn't fit with the market.

I think that's changing again. Has Mario Kart Made a splash? Of course. Is the Wii U on an upswing? Yes. Will that continue? Unsure but probably. E3 was huge, they actually received significant good press. Games are on the upswing, they wowed everyone with Zelda. Things couldshift back to a tumble, at the same time, they've made a better console than the Wii and could see continually growing interest. They are the only console maker creating games for everyone. That's always their niche they just didn't communicate it well enough early enough with the Wii U.

Not on the Wii U they don't.

I believe it's closer to 0 than most think. It isn't a large loss. Apparently they profit with one single game sale. That's been said for a long time. That's the way they run it. (And that's why 1st parties are so important to them, a Nintendo customer's first game purchase has like a 90% of being a Nintendo game).

It much larger, but they're moving a lot into the wrong direction.

I didn't mention because of 3DS version. It'll certainly move some HW, but the series has historically less appeal than Mario Kart. Hyrule Warriors will do well in the States where Zelda is popular.

I disagree with this overall. It's been a bump in the road but those happen. I don't think they are perfect at all but I do think they are fixing a lot of their mistakes.

I never said they should scrap it.

Smash will move consoles. Watch_dogs, Bayonetta, and Zelda are not popular in Japan and Japan is the worst selling region for all of these series.

I don't it'll stay much ahead of Xbox One. It'll be neck and neck come holidays, and I'm sure MS will have some great bundles that may push it ahead.

What do you think of the PSP? It did over 80 million (i.e. more than half of what the DS did) and the 3DS isn't touching that. It's going to be the worst selling Nintendo handheld (blame tablets and smartphones really).

and yeah, i derped on my quality comment. Left out the most important word in the sentence.

No console is selling well in Japan right now. That's worth mentioning.

This is definitely true. Japan used to rival the US in console sales, but isn't close these days. PS4 still has a shot at respectable sales, but it needs FF15, Resident Evil, MGS, etc. to come soon.

Gah, a few more things I forgot to respond to.

They are the only console maker creating games for everyone.

This I disagree with completely, unless you mean literally internally developing/publishing (which I disagree even more in that case).

quote:

This statement was made back in November of 2012 (link) before any of the bundles or price drops. A lot has changed since then. If they didn't profit at $400, no chance they're profiting at $300 with free games thrown in.

Yeah, that obscure title Smash Bros isn't going to sell any systems.

Does it even outsell XB1 the month SSB comes out? It won't outsell the PS4.

Keep on reading. I admitted I forgot about it, because it's on the back burner until the 3DS version releases.

In hard numbers, but they have less consoles/population. But Nintendo still cares about the Japanese market. More so than the rest. To a fault maybe, but if they can get success there, that's a good thing.

And the WiiU won't? And they have Amiibo coming out, aka Crack for Collectors. Pokemon is huge in Japan, think about that.

Agreed, but DS is 158 million, so PSP is basically at half. 3DS is at 45 million, and still has 3 years left or so.

The Wii and Nintendo were popular for a reason. They didn't capitalize on that, but they really do make games for everyone. I could get my sister or niece to pick up a Wii controller (I actually have to reject playing because they want to play often). Even with something like LBP non-gamers just kind of go "meh," with a Playstation. This is Nintendo's strength. There's a big difference with Nintendo games.

Can't find more resources but this was recently:

LINK

quote:

According to senior analyst David Gibson, Nintendo will not be taking a loss on Wii U consoles sold anymore. This change happened after the quarterly financial briefing, in which Nintendo stated its outlook for the next year to be 3.6 million units sold. According to Gibson, this is more than Nintendo currently has in stock, so more Wii U units will need to be produced, meaning Nintendo will not be taking a loss on inventory sitting in warehouses waiting to be on retail shelves.

I'm so close to getting one, but waiting until nov 2015, possibly even longer for Zelda, isn't appealing

I do have

Mario galaxy
Mario galaxy 2
Skyward Sword
Twilight Princess
Punch Out
and others

plus wind waker hd (the only Zelda I've never played)
