Can You Watch a Rented iTunes Movie on a Plane?

can you watch a rented iTunes movie on a place w/o a wifi connection?
the answers on apple support seem to be differing, so i wanted to see if anyone had any personal experience doing it.

If you download it first to your iPhone or iPad you can. Make sure you have enough space. HD movies take up a lot of space. Since there is no wifi on the plane, you need to do this first at home before you leave.

I only have experience with Southwest but they block video streaming on their in flight wi-fi.
Would imagine other airlines do the same.
