Out of wedlock, of course. Daddy was her drug dealer...must have been working the barter system. But I digress...not the point of this post.

She was in undergrad and paying her way with help from her grandparents' frugal savings. Then, she spits out a child. Lo and behold! She qualifies for enough governmental assistance and Medicaid to pay living expenses , tuition and fees for both undergrad and masters degrees. Still has college fund savings left in the bank. God bless the U S taxpayer.

My buddy has twin girls in pharmacy school. They failed to get pregnant and have children their entire college careers. Maybe he's the only one of the three that got screwed...he ( or the girls through student loans) is footing the entire bill without any taxpayer provided reward.

I have two boys in college. The likelihood of one getting pregnant and winning the toddler scholarship is slim. We have an awesome system in place.

I've got an old buddy from the Mecca that has had heart issues the last few years. He was out of work for a few years awaiting a heart transplant and has been on Medicare since then. Low and behold, he got back into the work force late last fall and worked a salaried job paying about 70k a year up until July 3rd of this year when he was fired. He has lost everything he ever owned with the exception of three pairs of clothes and a guitar due to his battle with drugs.

He's been in a detox program for 20 days since last Saturday and I was able to talk to him Wednesday night on the phone. The next step is a 90 day full throttle rehab facility to hopefully get him drug free. I asked the question as to whom was paying for the treatments being that he didn't have a pot to piss in or a window to throw it out of.

His response: "Medicare"

This blew my mind being that he has been gainfully employed for the last 9 months.

Unqualified mercy...the philosophical/moral epitome of 'fool's gold'. Sooner or later, everybody gives up doing the right thing...because it don't pay them who do right...rather them who don't. And they can't pay. Immoral and unjust. And it all goes down rom there; and that's when the reboot happens, and the weak that policy was supposed to help....go away.

Live and learn.

Ain't it grand?

We reward poor judgment and lack of accountability.

See it every damn day.

This is the exact type of scenario that I was talking about in another thread about the family. Instead of this government incentivizing marriage, they do the opposite and reward irresponsible behaviors that only encourages more of the same. It's absolutely ridiculous and shameful.

This is the part we should be focusing on fixing.

Sounds like you resent your niece getting help. I don't have a problem helping someone that's trying to help themselves. I have a problem with the lifelongs who won't lift a finger to break the cycle of poverty.
