i would not binge watch the first season ... honestly, you could start watching it right now if someone told you a few facts about a couple of characters ... you'd def need to know something about the lead ...
it's a concept that could have a lot of interesting stories, but the writers started off with 1 interesting plot, then segued into something altogether different that wasn't related to the original story at all ... and it was done rather poorly, imo ...

I think it'd work well for a binge. There's a decent story there, but the pacing was a bit slow to hold your interest week to week.
I've only seen the first episode of season 2 and it felt weird, hopefully it's just setting things up. There are definitely some good stories to be told between the cartels, corruption, and all the disappearances and murders of young women that has been happening long before any of the cartel stuff blew up.
