re: Why do people think it is impossible to have a good offense with a freshmen QB?

I respect your positive outlook, but you're really reaching.
Redshirt Freshman have experience and time in the playbooks and speed of the game. This is isn't just a high school game you're throwing these kids out into where they can just go out and out-athlete everyone on the field.
Manziel and Winston are all exceptions to the rule and the majority of Freshmen and RS Freshmen aren't what you want on the field.
Here's a link that shows the numbers. If Harris wins the job, then LSU is in trouble, IMO. That's not good enough and I dread the fact that they're even considering starting a true freshman.

No first-year passer has made remotely that level of immediate impact. Among true freshman quarterbacks in the six major conferences over the last five years, in fact, only six have both a) Started a majority of their team's games, and b) Finished with a pass efficiency rating above 130, roughly in line with the national average:

if lsu can get thru wisconsin, its not october that there is a rough road test.
I think LSU has a good shot at being really good.

I'm not really reaching for anything. LSU has one of the best lines in the country and a stacked stable of RBs and might have an elite defense. I didn't say LSU is going undefeated and winning the National Championship. I said they can still have a formidable offense with a true freshman QB in Harris.
How many of the true freshman in the article you posted won the starting job like Harris would be doing if he plays? How many came in out of necessity due to injury or because the first starter blew arse. Also, very few of the teams on that list have any where NEAR the talent on the roster as LSU does.
Again, I never said anything about a National Championship. Barkley went 9-3 as a true freshman at USC it looks like. I wouldn't put it past LSU to have a formidable enough of an offense and a dominant defense and put together a 9-3 season or better.

It'a not like it's never been done before.
As a true freshman QB, Tommy Hodson led LSU to the SEC title in 1986. Is it possible in this era? Maybe but I wouldn't wager any $ on it.

Redshirt freshman Manziel was ok.
Redshirt freshman Winston did allright.

well if you are talking like Harris is starting then
redshirt >>>> true
Jennings isn't a freshman

There is a reason guys like this get so much publicity, what they did was rare and difficult to do
I do agree that these two guys are most likely an exception to the rule but...
I think more and more as these offenses evolve we will see more Fresh QBs come in and be very impressive.

Of course it's possible. It's just a lot harder.

It may very well be the evolution of CFB, due to 7on7 camps, and better coaching at the HS level. Just not enough sample size to say that at this point.
On a side note - I find unknown years like this more enoyable than when we have a known commodity. It's exciting to see what the kids can do.

uh, Winston struggled against Auburns vaunted defense (sarcasm). And that was after a year of playing.
LSUs QBs will see tougher defenses week in and week out. Not just one time a year.
